A double-row spherical roller bearing in the ISO 222 series, 120 mm bore by 215 mm outside diameter by 58 mm wide, with a straight cylindrical bore. Two rows of barrel-shaped rollers run in a common spherical outer raceway, which is what gives this bearing type its defining ability: it carries very heavy radial load and axial load in both directions while tolerating misalignment between shaft and housing.
222 — double-row spherical roller bearing, dimension series 22 (the lower cross-section of the two common series; 223 is the heavier one)
24 — bore code, 120 mm
No K — straight cylindrical bore. This bearing pushes onto a plain shaft and needs no adapter sleeve or tapered seat
CD — an NSK internal-design and cage code. NSK does not publish a plain-language decode for it in a source we could verify, so it is carried as-is rather than guessed at
C3 — radial internal clearance greater than Normal
Spherical rollers are the workhorse of heavy, dirty, misaligned duty — conveyor pulleys, crushers, vibrating screens, fans, paper machines, gearbox output shafts. The self-aligning geometry means a shaft that bends under load, or two housings that are not perfectly in line, does not translate into edge loading on the raceway. That tolerance is the whole reason to specify one instead of a cylindrical roller bearing.
C3 clearance matters more here than most buyers expect. Choose it when the inner ring will run hotter than the outer — a driven pulley in a hot mill, for example — or when a tight interference fit on the shaft would otherwise squeeze normal clearance to nothing. Fitting a Normal-clearance bearing where the design called for C3 will run it preloaded and hot; fitting C3 where Normal was intended leaves the rollers loose and skidding. Clearance is a specification, not a preference.
Boundary dimensions 120 x 215 x 58 mm are the ISO 22224 envelope and are confirmed. Basic dynamic rating, basic static rating and limiting speed are left blank deliberately. Published figures do exist for other makers’ 22224 variants, but internal design, roller count and cage all differ between designs within this envelope, and no NSK-published figure for the CD execution could be verified. Quoting a competitor’s number here would be a guess dressed up as a spec.
New old stock, opened box. The item is recorded as marked made in Japan, and there is staining visible in the photographs — surface discolouration on the rings from long storage, disclosed rather than glossed over. Inspect the photographs and ask if you need a closer look at the raceways before ordering.
Same-envelope straight-bore spherical rollers from other makers include SKF 22224 E and 22224 EK (K is the tapered-bore version and is not a drop-in for a plain shaft), FAG 22224-E1-XL, Timken 22224EJW33 and NTN 22224. If your housing feeds oil through the outer ring, you need a W33 variant — this designation does not indicate an outer-ring lubrication groove, so confirm before substituting one for the other.
