The housing is one-piece solid cast iron with no pilot; the insert inside it is a double-row SPHERICAL ROLLER bearing, bearing 22208, not a ball bearing. That distinction is the whole point of the part. A spherical roller insert carries several times the load of a comparable ball insert of the same bore and it accommodates shaft misalignment through the roller-to-outer-race geometry rather than by rocking the whole insert in the housing. If your application broke a ball-type flange unit, this is the family you step up to.

Decoding the designation

F3R means Flange, 3-bolt, Round. S2 identifies the S-2000 spherical roller product line. 107 is the bore code and reads as 1-7/16 in (36.51 mm). The trailing L is the seal code: L is the labyrinth metallic seal. The absence of a trailing E means this is the non-expansion configuration. If the insert needed replacing on its own, the corresponding insert part number is INS-S2-107L.

Correcting the source data

Earlier description data for this item called the insert a “ball bearing insert.” That is wrong and it materially understates the part. F3R-S2-107L takes a double-row spherical roller insert (bearing 22208), which is a substantially heavier and more expensive product than any SC-family ball insert. Do not price it, spec it, or cross-reference it against a ball unit. The load numbers below make the gap obvious: 20,800 lb dynamic in a 1-7/16 in bore is roughly four times what a standard-duty ball flange unit of the same bore will publish.

A second point on part numbering: Dodge’s own current catalog number for F3R-S2-107L is item 070492. The number 049728 that travelled with this record is a legacy or alternate stock number for the same configuration. Both are listed here so a search on either lands correctly.

What these specs mean in practice

The seal code is the most consequential option on an S-2000 unit and it is a genuine trade-off, not a good-better-best ladder. The L labyrinth seal is metallic and non-contacting: it blocks contamination with a tortuous clearance path instead of a rubbing lip. Because nothing touches, there is no seal drag, no frictional heat at the seal, and no lip wear, which is why the labyrinth version carries the higher speed rating — 3,600 rpm here. The cost of that is that a clearance seal cannot exclude high-pressure water or fine airborne particulate. In washdown, wet process, dusty grain handling or heavy powder environments, the R seal — the TRIDENT triple-lip rubbing seal — is the correct choice, because it physically contacts and seals. You pay for that contact in drag and in a lower permissible speed. Pick L for speed and cool running in a reasonably clean environment; pick R for exclusion when the environment is the enemy.

Non-expansion means this unit locates the shaft axially. On any shaft carried by two mounted units, exactly one should be fixed (non-expansion) and the other should be expansion. The fixed unit sets shaft position; the expansion unit lets the insert float axially in the housing so the shaft can grow and shrink with temperature without loading either bearing against the other. Two fixed units on the same shaft will fight each other as soon as the line warms up, and the loser is a bearing. The convenience of the S-2000 platform is that these units are field-convertible between fixed and expansion, so you are not locked into one role by the number on the box.

Note the 250 °F ceiling. That is higher than the SC ball family manages and it is one of the practical reasons people specify S-2000 on hot machinery, alongside the load capacity.

Fitting notes

The housing has no pilot, so the flange face is your only location reference; make sure the mounting surface is flat and clean or you will distort a solid cast housing when you torque the three bolts. Bring the bolts up evenly in stages rather than tightening one at a time. Set the Springlok collar setscrews progressively and alternately onto a clean, burr-free shaft, then re-check them after initial run-in. If you are pairing this unit with an expansion unit on the same shaft, decide which end is fixed before you set any setscrews — the fixed end should be the end closest to the drive so shaft growth runs away from the coupling.

Interchange guidance

Dodge mounted bearings are now Dodge Industrial under RBC Bearings, sold previously under Baldor and ABB and originally under Rexnord; S-2000 literature under any of those names applies to this part. Cross on either item number, 070492 (current) or 049728 (legacy). Punctuation varies across distributor systems, so also search F3RS2107L and F3R S2 107L. The related configurations differ only in the trailing codes: F3R-S2-107R substitutes the TRIDENT rubbing seal, and adding E to either gives the expansion version. The insert alone is INS-S2-107L. Do not substitute an SC-family ball unit of the same bore — the bore matches but the capacity does not.
