A Dodge Tigear-2 right-angle worm gear speed reducer in the 2.00 in centre-distance frame, 15:1 nominal ratio, with a NEMA 56C quill input that accepts a 5/8 in motor shaft and a 1 in solid output shaft on the right-hand side. The worm set turns the drive 90°, drops the speed and multiplies torque, the standard small-drive gearbox for conveyors, feeders, augers, mixers and packaging machinery.

Decoding the order code

Tigear-2 numbers read as centre distance, input style, ratio, output shaft, motor frame. 20: 2.00 in centre distance, the gear case size and mounting footprint. Q: quill input, where the motor shaft slides directly into a hollow quill inside the reducer with no separate coupling. 15: 15:1 nominal reduction. R: solid output shaft on the right-hand side as viewed from the input. 56: NEMA 56C motor flange, which is the 5/8 in motor shaft.

What these specs mean in practice

A quill input is not the same as a C-face coupled input. The motor’s own shaft becomes the worm input, so the motor shaft diameter and length matter as much as the flange: a 56C motor with the wrong shaft extension will not seat. There is also no coupling to buy and no coupling to wear.

Centre distance sets the torque class rather than the ratio. A 2.00 in Tigear-2 is a small-frame box; the 2.3 in, 2.6 in and 3.0 in frames are progressively stronger and share no housing dimensions with it.

15:1 is a mid-range worm ratio and is not a self-locking arrangement.

R is the output hand. The L-coded build is the mirror image.

Mounting data

The motor shaft diameter and usable length set whether a motor seats in the quill. The unit is factory filled and sealed for a specified mounting position, and the correct oil level differs between mounting positions.

Interchange guidance

20Q15L56 is the same reducer with the output on the opposite hand. Other 20-series ratios share the housing and mounting but change output speed. A-code builds (for example 30A07L18) are C-face coupled rather than quill and are not interchangeable with a Q-code unit. Dodge Tigear-2 is now sold under Regal Rexnord; the numbering is unchanged.
