What these specs mean in practice

The spherical outer raceway allows the inner ring and roller set to swivel inside the outer ring, so a shaft sitting slightly out of line with its housing still loads the rollers evenly across their length. Long conveyor shafts and fabricated screen bodies rarely hold better alignment, which is why this bearing type is standard there.

Two opposed roller rows carry thrust in both directions as well as radial load, so a separate thrust bearing is usually unnecessary in the arrangement.

C4 clearance is the specification that defines this bearing’s duty. It leaves substantially more room between rollers and raceways than the normal class, and that room is consumed by inner-ring thermal growth and by the interference the taper mounting creates. Screen bodies and hot fans run the inner ring far warmer than the housing, so a tighter clearance class would preload itself in service. C4 is a deliberate choice for that condition rather than a loose tolerance.

The 1:12 tapered bore is a mounting feature: drive-up distance along the taper sets the interference fit and therefore the residual clearance, giving repeatable clearance control on site with a lock nut and a feeler gauge.

Quantity and configuration

One bearing ships. The adapter sleeve is not included — the tapered bore mounts on an H320 sleeve, which seats on a 90 mm cylindrical shaft, with a KM20 lock nut and MB20 lock washer. Housings, seals and locking hardware are supplied separately.

Fitting notes

Mounting is a drive-up operation: the bearing advances along the taper until the measured reduction in radial internal clearance reaches the value tabulated for the size and the C4 class, checked with a feeler gauge across the unloaded top roller. On a shaft machined with its own 1:12 seat the bearing mounts directly and a lock nut retains it. The housing lubrication port aligns with the outer-ring groove so grease reaches the centre of the roller set.

Interchange guidance

Same-specification equivalents are tapered-bore 22220 K spherical rollers at C4 clearance with W33 features: SKF 22220 EK/C4, FAG 22220E1K.C4, NSK 22220EAKE4C4, Timken 22220KEJW33C4, Koyo 22220RHRKW33C4. Bearings of this envelope at C3 or normal clearance are a specification change, not a substitution — a hot screen or fan shaft fitted with a tighter clearance class loses its running clearance as it warms. The straight-bore 22220EAW33C4 is a different part and takes no adapter sleeve.
