An SKF 22209 C.K.J double-row spherical roller bearing measuring 45 mm bore x 85 mm outside diameter x 23 mm wide. It has a 1:12 tapered bore, is open on both sides, and runs a stamped steel cage on a guide ring with normal (CN) radial internal clearance. Spherical roller bearings carry very high radial load plus axial load in both directions, and the spherical outer raceway lets the inner-ring assembly swivel so the bearing self-aligns to shaft deflection or housing misalignment. Sold as 1 Pc.
222 — double-row spherical roller bearing, ISO dimension series 22.
09 — bore code; 09 x 5 = 45 mm bore.
C — SKF internal design: optimised internal geometry with a guide ring between the roller rows in place of a fixed central rib, and a pressed-type cage.
K — tapered bore, taper 1:12.
J — stamped steel cage, centred on the inner ring.
No clearance suffix — normal (CN) radial internal clearance.
No W33 in the designation — this outer ring has no relubrication groove and no lubrication holes.
The tapered bore is the single most important thing to get right on this listing. A 1:12 taper is a mounting system, not a shaft fit. On a plain cylindrical shaft the bearing sits on an H309 adapter sleeve (or is withdrawn with an AH309 withdrawal sleeve), and the sleeve is what sets the interference: you drive the bearing up the taper until the internal clearance has been reduced by the amount the design calls for, then lock it with a KM9 locknut and MB9 lockwasher. Because the sleeve carries the shaft, the shaft seat under an H309 is 40 mm, not 45 mm. Alternatively the bearing mounts directly on a machined 1:12 tapered shaft seat with no sleeve. Either way, drive-up and residual clearance must be measured — driven too far up the taper the bearing is preloaded, runs hot and fails early.
Normal clearance on a tapered-bore bearing deserves a second look before you fit it. Drive-up deliberately consumes internal clearance, and starting from CN rather than C3 leaves a narrower usable drive-up window before the bearing goes into preload. It is perfectly correct where the design specifies a light adapter fit and the bearing runs at roughly uniform temperature; if your position calls for a heavy fit or a hot inner ring, a C3 version gives you more to give away.
With no lubrication groove or holes in the outer ring, this bearing cannot be regreased through the housing bore. Grease has to reach it from the sides, so plan the housing cavities and the grease escape path accordingly. If your housing has a feed hole aimed at the outer ring, specify a W33 version instead.
Note the speed capability of this size. The 45 mm bore 222-series envelope runs comfortably faster than the larger sizes in the family, which is why it turns up on pump and fan shafts as well as slow conveyor work.

One bearing per sale — 1 Pc. What ships is the complete non-separable bearing: inner ring with the 1:12 tapered bore, two rows of spherical rollers, stamped steel cage, guide ring and outer ring. The H309 adapter sleeve, AH309 withdrawal sleeve, KM9 locknut, MB9 lockwasher and housing are separate items and are not included. If your shaft is not already machined with a 1:12 taper, you need the sleeve to mount this bearing.
Measure the unmounted radial internal clearance with a feeler gauge before you start, then drive the bearing up the taper and re-measure until the clearance reduction matches the mounting table for the fit you want. On a bearing this size the usable drive-up is small, so work in small increments. Support and drive against the inner ring only; the outer ring swivels and will cock the rollers if used to drive the assembly. Keep the axial component well below the radial load: for the 22209 envelope the axial load factor e is 0.26, and above that ratio the unloaded roller row can lose contact and skid. Grease fill is typically 30–50% of free space.
The 45 x 85 x 23 mm 222-series envelope is industry-standard, and the tapered-bore version takes the same H309 sleeve across every brand. Direct equivalents for a tapered-bore, steel-cage, normal-clearance 22209: SKF’s own current 22209 EK, FAG 22209-E1-K, NSK 22209 CDK, NTN and NTN-SNR 22209 EAK, Timken 22209 KEJ, Koyo 22209RHK, RHP 22209 EKJ. Add W33 to any of those numbers if you want the lubrication groove and three holes, which this bearing does not have. A version without the K suffix has a straight cylindrical bore and needs no sleeve. A brass-caged version carries CA in SKF nomenclature, M or MB in FAG, CAM in NSK and EM in NTN, and is the choice for shock-loaded positions.
