The two rows of barrel-shaped rollers share a single spherical raceway in the outer ring, so the inner ring and roller set tilt within the outer ring and the bearing carries load through shaft deflection and housing misalignment.

Decoding the designation

The 222 dimension series is the wider, higher-capacity spherical roller series, and the bore code 16 gives 80 mm. The bare C is SKF’s pressed steel, inner-ring-guided cage designation for this family, the design that CC later superseded in the same envelope. C4 specifies radial internal clearance greater than C3, the widest of the commonly stocked settings. There is no K, so the bore is straight, and no W33, so the outer ring is plain with no lubrication groove or holes.

What these specs mean in practice

A double-row spherical roller bearing carries very heavy radial load and takes thrust in both directions, and it is the type chosen where a shaft flexes under load or a housing bore cannot be held in line. C4 clearance leaves more internal running room than C3, which is what a heavy interference fit on the shaft, a hot inner ring, or a heavily loaded and misaligned seat all consume in service. The trade is that a lightly loaded C4 bearing has more internal freedom than it needs, which shows up as roller skidding and noise at low load. With a plain outer ring, lubrication reaches the rollers from the housing cavity rather than through a feed groove.

Fitting notes

The inner ring is an interference fit on the shaft and is mounted by even heating rather than by pressing across the rollers. Residual radial internal clearance is measured with a feeler at the unloaded roller row after mounting, since the interference fit consumes part of the C4 allowance and the residual figure is what the bearing actually runs on.
