What this part is

A Festo VUVG series 5/2 directional control valve in the 10 mm width, built as a bistable (double solenoid) impulse valve. Two coils, no spring return: a short pulse to either coil throws the spool and it stays there when the pulse ends, so a double-acting cylinder holds its last commanded position through a power failure rather than snapping back. Piston-slide construction with soft seals, LED switching indication and a manual override for commissioning.

What these specs mean in practice

Bistable, not spring return. This is the detail that decides most substitutions. A B52 will not return to a rest position when de-energised, so it cannot replace an M52 in a circuit that relies on a spring to retract a cylinder on power loss — and equally, it is exactly what you want when the machine must not move on a power dip.

External pilot air means the pilot supply is fed separately rather than tapped from port 1. That is what lets the valve switch reliably at very low main pressure, and down to vacuum on the working line (−0.9 bar), but it also means the pilot port has to be plumbed or the valve simply will not shift.

Coil voltage is 24 V DC at very low power draw, so it drives directly from a PLC output card.

The B in B10 is a mounting statement: this is the sub-base version, so it bolts onto a mounting plate or valve manifold. No sub-base, manifold block or cable is included in this listing — if you need a stand-alone inline valve with threaded ports instead, that is the VUVG-L family.

Installation and setup notes

Plumb the external pilot port before commissioning — a bistable VUVG with an unconnected pilot supply looks like a dead coil. Pulse the coils rather than holding them; that is the point of a bistable, and continuous energisation just adds heat. On first power-up note which coil corresponds to which cylinder direction, because a bistable valve retains the position it was left in from the previous machine.

Interchange guidance

VUVG-B10-B52-ZT-F-1T1L (Festo 573418) is the same 5/2 bistable valve with internal rather than external pilot air — a different part, not a substitute. VUVG-B10-M52-RZT-F-1T1L (Festo 573416) is the monostable spring-return version in the same envelope: same body, opposite behaviour on power loss. VUVG-L10 valves are the inline threaded-port equivalents and do not fit a sub-base.
