What this part is

A Nexen Air Champ tooth clutch, size 5H45, in the 1.500 in finished-bore BASIC configuration. Compressed air engages it and a spring releases it, so it fails to the disengaged state when air is lost. Unlike a friction clutch it drives through mating teeth: there is no slip, no facing to wear and no torque fade as it heats. Once engaged, the driven side is mechanically locked to the driving side.

What these specs mean in practice

Air engaged, spring released is the safe-side arrangement for most machines: drop the air and the drive disconnects. Budget an air supply and a valve for it — neither is part of this listing.

Positive tooth engagement means no slipping. That is a virtue for holding torque and a constraint on how you use it: a tooth clutch is engaged at rest or at low differential speed, not slammed in at full speed against a loaded shaft. With 137 engagement positions it re-engages roughly every 2.6° of rotation.

Backlash is 0.28° — tight for a mechanical clutch, which is why tooth clutches turn up on indexing and registration drives. This is the non-positioning variant, though: it does not guarantee re-engagement at the same angular position. Nexen’s PSP positioning models (for example 5H45PSP) are the ones that do.

Torque range 1230 to 4900 in-lb depending on applied pressure, up to 80 psi maximum. Maximum speed is 3000 rpm.

Quantity and configuration

One clutch, new old stock. As a BASIC unit it ships without sprocket, sheave, pulley, mounting bracket, air valve or rotary air union. Note that this is the standard steel/aluminium construction — not a stainless unit.

Installation and setup notes

Feed air through a rotary union or through-shaft porting suited to a rotating clutch; a fixed hose onto a turning air chamber will not last. Set supply pressure to the torque you actually need rather than the maximum — running at 80 psi when 40 will do just adds shock into the tooth engagement. Engage at or near zero differential speed. Check the keyway fit and the spring return travel before commissioning a long-stored unit.

Interchange guidance

907013 is the same 5H45 clutch bored 40 mm rather than 1-1/2 in. 913032 (5H45PSP-E, 1.500 bore) is the positioning version — a different function, not a substitute, if your machine needs repeatable angular re-engagement.
