This is a cone only: the tapered inner ring with its roller and cage assembly. The cup, the separate outer ring the rollers actually run against, is not included. A tapered roller bearing is only a bearing when you have both halves. This part mounts on a shaft, not in a housing bore.

It arrives in its original carton, printed THE TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING COMPANY, CANTON · OHIO · U.S.A. and labelled 5784-T CONE / MARCA REGISTRADA — a corporate name Timken retired in 1970, which dates this as genuinely old stock rather than recent production in a vintage box.
The previous listing claimed a bore of 3.170 x 3.040 in and described the part as a taper bore. Both statements are wrong and both have been removed.
A single cone has one bore diameter, not two. A pair of figures like 3.170 x 3.040 in labelled as ID is internally impossible and almost certainly an outside-diameter and inside-diameter mix-up somewhere upstream in the ERP.The photographs show a plain straight cylindrical bore with no taper and no keyway. There is nothing to support a tapered-bore or adapter-sleeve design. Taper bore has been struck.We are not substituting a guessed dimension for the removed one. Timken’s current catalogue returns no entry for 5784 or 5784T on either catalogue path; adjacent numbers such as 5578, 5584 and 575 are still listed, but this designation is not. Verified: the manufacturer, the designation as marked on both ring and carton, the country of manufacture, that it is a single-row cone and not a cup or a set, and that the bore is straight and cylindrical. An industry-quoted mate of 5735 circulates for this cone but we have not been able to confirm it against a manufacturer source, so treat it as a lead to check rather than a specification.

Bearings outlive catalogues. A machine built in the 1950s or 1960s may still be running, and the cone that fits it may have been dropped from the current range decades ago even though the machine has not changed. Obsolete inch-series numbers like this one are exactly what maintenance departments cannot buy new, which is why New Old Stock in the original carton has real value: it is dimensionally the part the machine was designed around, not a modern approximation that requires reworking a shaft.
Cone and cup are ground and lapped as a matched design pair. The contact angle of the cone raceway is meaningless without the matching cup angle, so do not run this cone against a cup of a different part number or a different manufacturer’s nominally similar cup. You get contact concentrated on the roller ends, edge loading, and a raceway that spalls long before its calculated life.
Fit the cone by pressing on its own inner ring face. Never drive it through the rollers — the load path goes roller to raceway, and one blow leaves a brinell indentation that becomes a vibration source and then a failure.
A single-row tapered roller bearing is not preset. Once the cone and cup are assembled, the bearing must be adjusted to a specified endplay or preload. Too loose and the rollers skid rather than roll, beating out the raceway; too tight and internal friction generates heat faster than the oil or grease can remove it, and the bearing can fail within hours of start-up. Find the OEM setting figure for your position before final tightening.
Old stock deserves a look before it goes in. Check the raceway and rollers for rust staining or storage marks, and repack or flush the original preservative for the lubricant your application actually uses.
