Decoding the designation

7012 is the ISO 70 dimension series at a 60 mm bore. T specifies the phenolic laminate cage, DU marks the rings as duplex and universally ground, L sets light preload, and P4 is precision class ABEC 7. The carton carries two further designations for the same bearing: 7012TDUEP7, the same part written in RHP’s EP class scheme where EP7 corresponds to ABEC 7, and the Timken/Fafnir number MM9112WI CR DUL, in which the 9100WI series maps to the ISO 70xx family, so 9112 is a 7012, and CR is the phenolic outer-land-riding cage.

What these specs mean in practice

Light preload is the setting chosen for high-speed spindle work: it gives enough axial stiffness to control ball skidding and hold running accuracy while keeping friction, heat generation and grease shear low. A medium or heavy preload in the same envelope trades speed capability for stiffness. The phenolic laminate cage is roughly a third the density of brass, self-lubricating, and quiet at speed, which is why it is standard on grease-lubricated machine tool spindle bearings.

Preload is established by clamping the ground ring faces together; universally matchable rings need no spacer or shim stack. Shaft and housing seats held to ISO 4 or better preserve the running accuracy the P4 class buys. Grease fill for a preloaded phenolic-caged spindle bearing is typically 15 to 20 percent of free space.

Interchange guidance
