What this part is

This is an SKF 2212 EKTN9/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing with a 60 mm tapered bore, 110 mm outside diameter and 28 mm width. Two rows of balls run on a common spherical raceway in the outer ring, so the inner ring and shaft can swivel freely relative to the housing.

Decoding the designation

The 22 series prefix with bore code 12 gives the 60 mm bore self-aligning ball bearing. E marks the reinforced current design, and the K specifies a 1:12 tapered bore in place of a straight one. TN9 is a glass-fibre reinforced polyamide 6,6 cage, rated for continuous service to 120 °C. C3 is a radial internal clearance greater than normal.

Bore taper and mounting hardware

Adapter sleeve H312 fits this bearing and is a separate part, not included. The sleeve seats on a 55 mm plain shaft — one bore-code step below the bearing bore — and is supplied with a KM12 locknut and an MB12 lockwasher.

What these specs mean in practice

A self-aligning ball bearing tolerates far more angular misalignment than any other ball bearing type, which is what makes it the standard choice for long shafts, textile and agricultural drives, and housings that cannot be bored in line. Radial capacity is modest for the envelope and axial capacity is low, because the balls sit on a spherical outer raceway rather than a shoulder. The polyamide cage runs quieter and with less friction than pressed steel but sets the 120 °C temperature limit for the assembly.

Fitting notes

The bearing goes up the sleeve taper until the specified radial internal clearance reduction is reached, set by measured drive-up rather than by feel. The outer ring is left free to align in its housing seat, which is what allows the self-aligning action to work.

Same-spec equivalents are FAG 2212-K-TVH-C3, NSK 2212KTNC3 and NTN 2212KC3, all 60 mm tapered bore, 110 x 28 mm, polyamide cage, C3. The straight-bore 2212 ETN9/C3 shares the envelope but mounts directly on a cylindrical seat with no sleeve, and the 2212 EKTN9 without a clearance suffix is normal CN clearance; both are related sizes rather than substitutions.
