Correcting the source data

Earlier copy for this listing called it a flange mount bearing. It is not a flange unit — P2B is Dodge’s two-bolt pillow block prefix, and a pillow block bolts to a horizontal surface below the shaft, while a flange unit bolts to a vertical face around the shaft. Bolt count and mounting face are part of the housing style, and the two are not interchangeable in any machine.

What these specs mean in practice

The expansion designation is the spec that decides this sale. On a long shaft with a bearing at each end, only one of them may hold the shaft axially. The other must let the shaft grow and shrink with temperature, or the two housings fight each other and the bearings are destroyed by axial load that nothing designed for. An RE expansion unit is that floating end: its outer race slides in the housing bore. A non-expansion unit of the same size is the fixed end. Fit two expansion units and the shaft wanders; fit two fixed units and you tear the bearings apart. Confirm which end you are replacing before ordering.

The Type K insert is the other reason to choose this over a ball pillow block. Double-row tapered rollers seat on opposed contact angles, so they carry heavy radial load plus thrust in both directions and are far stiffer than a ball insert — but they are not self-aligning. Unlike a spherical roller or a wide-inner-ring ball unit, a Type K expects the shaft and the two housing seats to be genuinely in line. Shim the bases properly.

Fitting notes

Set the fixed end first, then the expansion end, and make sure the sliding outer race really is free in its bore before you tighten anything. Shim both bases so the two bores are in line — a Type K is not self-aligning and will not absorb the misalignment a spherical roller unit would. The slotted bolt holes give 9-1/4 to 10-1/4 inch of bolt centre adjustment, so the mounting surface does not have to be drilled to a single dimension. Grease through the fitting on the housing at the interval the duty calls for; on a hot conveyor shaft that is often shorter than the general guidance.

Interchange guidance

Genuine equivalents are other 2-1/2 inch bore two-bolt pillow blocks with a double-row tapered roller expansion insert and matching bolt centres and centre height — Link-Belt and Rexnord heavy roller pillow blocks in the same series being the usual alternatives. Do not substitute across insert types: a P2B-S2-208RE has an S-2000 double-row spherical roller insert, a P2B-IP-208RE an Imperial spherical roller insert, and a P2B-DI-208RE a different design again. All share the bore and none is a drop-in for a Type K. A P2B-K-208R without the E is the non-expansion version — the opposite half of the pair.
