What this part is

This is a split plummer block housing with a 120 mm seating bore, sized for 213-series bearings. It is a two-bolt pedestal housing cast in grey cast iron that separates horizontally into a cap and a base, supplied as a matched and marked pair with its cap bolts. Bearings sit in the spherical or cylindrical seating, seals fit the 65 mm seal bores at each end, and the whole assembly bolts down to a foundation or frame through two M16 holes on 230 mm centres.

Correcting the source data

Our previous listing described this as a “Flange Mount Bearing Housing” while also calling it a pillow block. Those two things are mutually exclusive, and the flange description is wrong. SKF’s own product family for this part is “Split plummer block housings, SNL and SE series.” An SNL is a pedestal, or plummer, or pillow block — it bolts down through a flat base to a horizontal surface, with the shaft running parallel to that surface. A flange housing bolts to a vertical face with the shaft passing through it, and SKF’s flange families are FNL, FSNL, FY and F4B. If you need a flange housing and receive a pedestal block, there is no way to mount it — the bolt pattern, the mounting plane and the load path are all different. We have corrected the title and removed the flange wording.

Which shaft size does an SNL 213 fit

This is the question that gets ordered wrong more than any other, because an SNL housing does not have a shaft size — it has a bearing seating size. The 120 mm seating bore accepts 213-size bearings, and those bearings come in two bore types that fit two different shafts:

Tapered bore on an adapter sleeve: a 22213 K spherical roller bearing or 1213 K self-aligning ball bearing, mounted on an H 313 adapter sleeve, fits a 60 mm shaft. Same housing, two shaft diameters, five millimetres apart. Measure your shaft, then decide which bearing and whether you need the sleeve. If you are replacing an existing assembly, pull the old bearing and check whether it sits on a tapered sleeve or straight on the shaft before you order anything.

The housing ships bare. SKF supplies SNL housings as the housing only: a matched, marked cap and base with cap bolts. The bearing, the adapter sleeve, the seals and the end cover are all separate order items. That catalogue string “SNL 213 + 22213 K + H 313” is an arrangement reference describing a complete assembly — it is not a kitted part number and it is not what you receive. Budget for the bearing, sleeve and seals as separate purchases.

Why the mounting dimensions matter before you buy

The 80 mm centre height is the figure that decides whether the shaft ends up where your drive line needs it. If you are replacing a housing from another series or another manufacturer, a difference of even a few millimetres in centre height throws out coupling alignment or belt tracking and cannot be shimmed away in one direction. The 230 mm bolt centres and 16 mm bolt diameter determine whether the existing foundation holes line up or whether the base plate needs re-drilling. Get those two numbers checked against the installation before ordering, because a housing that is right in every other respect is still useless if the base does not land on the existing holes.

Why specify a split housing at all

The reason split housings dominate conveyor, fan and heavy drive-shaft applications is service access. With a one-piece housing, changing a bearing means dismantling the drive: pull the coupling, slide the housing off the shaft end, or in the worst case remove the shaft entirely. On a long conveyor shaft carrying a pulley, or a fan shaft with an impeller on it, that is a full shutdown and often a lifting operation.

With a split block you undo the cap bolts, lift the cap off, and the bearing, sleeve and seals are all accessible in place. You can inspect the bearing, replace a seal, regrease properly, or swap the bearing entirely without disturbing the shaft or the coupling. On a plant where downtime is billed by the hour, that difference is the difference between a two-hour job and a two-day job, and it is why the split design carries a price premium over one-piece alternatives.

SNL 213 versus SNL 3xx and other series

The number in an SNL designation follows the bearing housed, not a different product family. SNL 2xx housings take ISO 2-series bearings and SNL 3xx take 3-series bearings. Because a 3-series bearing of the same bore has a larger outside diameter and heavier construction, an SNL 3xx housing for the same shaft is physically bigger, heavier and has a greater centre height. SNL 5xx and 6xx are the inch-shaft adapter-sleeve series. None of these interchange. An SNL 213 accepts a 120 mm outside diameter bearing and nothing else.
