The bearing carries heavy radial load, takes thrust in both axial directions, and accommodates static misalignment and running shaft deflection.

What these specs mean in practice

The spherical outer raceway is what makes the bearing self-aligning, and the double row is what gives it thrust capacity in both directions rather than one. The reinforced E design uses longer rollers and thinner rings to lift the dynamic rating within the same envelope. The outer-ring groove and three holes let grease or oil enter at the centre of the two roller rows, feeding both rows evenly from a housing port, which is the arrangement used where the bearing is relubricated on a schedule rather than sealed for life. Fitting notes

The 1:12 tapered bore seats either on a matching tapered shaft journal or on an adapter sleeve fitted to a plain cylindrical shaft. The matching sleeve for this size is an H320, which takes a 90 mm shaft and is supplied by its maker complete with a KM 20 locknut and MB 20 lock washer. Drive-up distance along the taper sets the mounted radial clearance, so the C3 value above is the free clearance measured before mounting. Where the outer-ring lubrication holes are used, the housing lube port aligns with the groove, which is continuous around the ring and so requires no rotational indexing.

Interchange guidance

The ISO base number is 22220, and the equivalent SKF designation for a tapered-bore, W33, C3 execution is 22220 EK/C3W33. A 22220 with a cylindrical bore, a different cage code such as the machined brass M or the pressed steel CC, or a different clearance class occupies the same envelope and is a related size: cage material sets the temperature and speed rating, clearance class sets the mounted preload, and bore form sets the mounting method. Each of those changes the published ratings, so they are not substitutions.
