A Browning MTWS-223 take-up bearing unit: a cast iron wide-slot take-up cartridge carrying a 200-series wide-inner-ring ball bearing insert with a 1-7/16 in bore. The insert’s outer ring is spherical and seats in a matching spherical bore, so it self-aligns to shaft misalignment. The cartridge has no bolt holes — it is designed to slide along the machined ways of a take-up frame, and a take-up screw walks it along to tension a belt or chain.
Browning mounted ball bearing numbers are read as prefix plus bore code. M is the duty line — the medium-duty series, sitting above Browning’s normal-duty V line. TW is the housing style, take-up wide slot: not a pillow block, not a flange unit, and not a narrow-slot take-up. S is the locking method, setscrew; the same housing with an eccentric locking collar carries an E in that position instead, and the two are not the same part. 223 is the bore code, 1-7/16 in. Also written MTWS223 and MTWS 223.
The take-up cartridge complete with its ball insert, seals and setscrews. The take-up frame is not included, nor is the take-up screw, the shaft or any mounting hardware. Frames and cartridges are separate items across every mounted-bearing brand, so a cartridge on its own is a repair part for an existing frame. Before ordering, measure the slot width and way spacing on the frame you intend to use: a wide-slot cartridge will not fit a narrow-slot frame, and cartridges are not freely interchangeable between brands even where the slot looks similar.

A ball take-up is the right choice for light and medium conveyor duty where the load is mostly radial and the shaft turns reasonably fast — it costs a fraction of a spherical roller take-up and runs cooler at speed. Where it is the wrong choice is heavy shock loading and significant thrust: for those, a double-row spherical roller take-up in the same bore is the upgrade. Setscrew locking suits a clean, unhardened shaft turning in one direction; on a reversing drive the screws can walk loose, and the eccentric-collar version of this housing holds better. The self-aligning spherical insert absorbs the static misalignment a long conveyor frame develops under load, but it will not rescue a bent shaft or frames that are out of parallel.
Clean and lightly oil the frame ways before fitting so the cartridge slides freely. Wind both cartridges on a shaft back by the same amount — unequal take-up cocks the roll and shows up as belt mistracking rather than as a bearing fault. Tighten the setscrews evenly and remember they mark the shaft, so set the axial position first. Purge grease through the fitting with the shaft turning slowly until fresh grease appears at the seals, and expect to re-grease a take-up more often than a pillow block: it lives in the dirtiest part of a conveyor.
Browning is a Regal Rexnord brand, alongside Dodge, SealMaster and Link-Belt, so a buyer replacing this unit will often be quoted a cross from one of those lines — check the slot width and cartridge envelope rather than trusting a bore-for-bore cross. Within Browning, the normal-duty equivalent housing style in the same bore is VTWS-223 and the eccentric-collar version is the E-suffix build; those are related parts with different ratings and different locking, not drop-in equivalents. Browning also publishes cross-references from Dodge, Fafnir and Link-Belt numbering into its own mounted ball bearing range.
