A Fafnir SNW-09 adapter sleeve assembly sized for a 1-7/16 inch straight shaft. It is the mounting hardware that lets a tapered-bore bearing sit on plain, unmachined shafting: a thin steel sleeve with a 1:12 taper on the outside and a straight bore on the inside, plus the threaded locknut and lockwasher that draw the bearing up the taper.
Sleeve, locknut and lockwasher. There is no bearing and no housing in this listing. You supply the tapered-bore bearing — typically a K-suffix spherical roller or self-aligning ball bearing — and the pillow block or flange it lives in.
SNW = Fafnir/Timken adapter sleeve assembly for inch shafting, in the SAF and SNL housing scheme. 09 = the sleeve size, which fixes the outside taper and thread and therefore which bearing bore it fits. 1-7/16 = the shaft diameter the sleeve bore is machined for. A given SNW size covers several shaft diameters, so the shaft dimension is part of the order code, not an afterthought.

An adapter sleeve does two jobs. It converts a plain shaft into a tapered seat, and it sets the bearing’s internal clearance: how far you drive the bearing up the taper decides how much the inner ring expands, and therefore the running clearance. That makes the locknut tightening a measured operation, not a matter of feel — check clearance reduction with a feeler gauge or by measuring axial drive-up as the bearing maker specifies.
Because the sleeve grips the whole circumference, it needs no keyway, flat or ground seat, and it leaves the shaft unmarked. That is why adapter mounting is the standard answer on long line shafts and conveyor drives where the bearing must sit anywhere along plain shafting.
Note that a tapered-bore bearing bought on its own does not include its sleeve. If you have a K-suffix bearing and no sleeve, this is the missing half.
Sold as a lot of 6 pcs — six complete sleeve assemblies, each with its locknut and lockwasher. Buyers often need one per bearing position, so a set of six covers three two-bearing shafts.
Clean and lightly oil the shaft and the sleeve taper. Slide the sleeve on with the small end of the taper facing the bearing, fit the bearing, then draw it up with the locknut while turning the outer ring to keep the rollers seated. Measure the clearance reduction as you go and stop at the figure the bearing maker gives. Bend one tab of the lockwasher into a nut slot when you are done. A common failure is over-drive-up: it looks tight and runs hot, because the clearance has been taken to zero.
SNW-09 is the inch-series equivalent of the metric H23xx and H31xx adapter sleeve families, and the same assembly is supplied under Link-Belt, SKF, Dodge and Timken numbering for SAF and SNL-pattern housings. Match on sleeve size code and shaft diameter together — the size code alone does not identify the shaft. Related, not interchangeable: a metric H-series sleeve of similar diameter has a different thread and bore.
