One row of balls runs on angled raceways, so the bearing carries radial and axial load simultaneously — with the axial load acting in one direction only.
7315 — single-row angular contact ball bearing, 73 dimension series, bore code 15 (75 mm). The 73 series is the heavy section.B — 40° contact angle in SKF’s scheme. This is the number that defines the bearing’s character.E — SKF’s reinforced internal design: a larger ball complement and optimised raceways giving a higher load rating than the preceding build at the same envelope.CB — a controlled axial internal clearance class for universally matchable bearings. It means two of these can be paired without a separately specified spacer.M — solid machined brass cage.
40 degrees — and why SKF’s suffix letters are not the industry’s:
Contact angle is the whole trade-off in an angular contact bearing and it is the specification most often got wrong when cross-shopping brands, because the same-looking letters mean different angles in different schemes.
In SKF’s scheme, B = 40°, AC = 25° and A = 30°. In NSK’s scheme A = 30° and C = 15°. In RHP/NSK super-precision numbering, C = 15° and E = 25°. There is no cross-brand shortcut — you have to read the angle out of the correct manufacturer’s table, and this page is read out of SKF’s.
What 40° buys you is thrust. Increasing the contact angle steers more of the load path axially, so a 40° bearing has markedly higher axial capacity and higher axial stiffness than a 25° or 30° bearing of the same size. What it costs you is speed and radial capacity: a steeper angle increases ball spin and heat, and leaves less of the load path radial. This is the bearing for a shaft with substantial axial thrust that must not deflect — worm gear outputs, pump and compressor shafts, vertical shafts, machine spindles with heavy axial cutting load.
A solid machined brass cage is dimensionally stable at temperature, tolerates oil-mist and oil-jet lubrication and aggressive synthetic lubricants, and withstands shock load and high acceleration in ways pressed-steel and polymer cages do not. On a bearing running with a 40° angle — which generates more heat than a shallower one — that thermal tolerance is not a luxury. It also means the bearing can be heat-mounted without any cage-material restriction, which at a 75 mm bore is the practical mounting method anyway.
The corollary for buyers: a 7315BEP or 7315BEGAP of the same nominal size carries a polymer cage and is a different specification. If your machine runs hot, oil-jet lubricated or shock-loaded, the M is what you want and it is worth insisting on.

Note that the dynamic rating exceeds the static rating here — 132 kN against 104 kN — which is the reverse of what you see on roller bearings. That is normal for ball bearings: point contact gives good fatigue capacity but is more vulnerable to permanent indentation under a standing or shock load. If your application loads the bearing while stationary, the 104 kN static figure is the one that governs, and it is the lower of the two.
One bearing in stock. Because a single-row angular contact bearing takes thrust in one direction only, most shafts use two opposed — back-to-back (DB) for high moment rigidity, face-to-face (DF) where alignment is less certain, or tandem (DT) to share thrust in one direction. If your position is a pair, you need two, and the CB clearance class means two of these can be matched without a bespoke spacer.
Mount by heat at this size. Press only on the ring being fitted; never let mounting force pass through the balls. Observe the orientation — an angular contact bearing fitted the wrong way round takes thrust in the wrong direction, will unload immediately and will fail fast. The high shoulder on the outer ring identifies the load side.
