One row of balls runs between raceways offset relative to each other, so the line of contact through the balls sits at 15° to the radial plane. The bore is cylindrical. Each ring carries one high and one low shoulder, and that asymmetry is what gives the type its one-directional thrust capacity and its back-to-back, face-to-face and tandem mounting behaviour.
72 denotes a single-row angular contact ball bearing in dimension series 02. 14 is the bore code for a 70 mm bore. C denotes a 15° nominal contact angle in the SKF scheme. A single-row angular contact ball bearing takes radial load together with thrust in one direction. The contact angle sets the split between the two. At 15° the contact line is close to radial, so the bearing favours speed and radial stiffness over thrust capacity: the ball load path is shorter, centrifugal ball loading and cage stress are lower, and the bearing tolerates higher speed than a steeper angle in the same envelope. A 25° sibling in the same envelope carries substantially more thrust and runs slower, and a 40° version more again. That trade is the reason contact angle appears in the designation rather than sitting as a detail in a table.
Because the row is single and one-directional, the type is mounted in sets. Back-to-back gives a wide effective load span and high resistance to overturning moments. Face-to-face gives a narrow span, more tolerance of shaft-to-housing misalignment and less moment stiffness. Tandem stacks two or more bearings facing the same way and multiplies thrust capacity in one direction. In a paired set the preload is fixed by the ground offset on the ring faces, which is what a matching code on the ring identifies.
The 15° angle makes this the family used on machine-tool and high-speed spindles, pumps, gearbox input shafts and screw-drive supports, where a combined radial and moderate thrust load runs continuously.

The cylindrical bore seats on a straight shaft journal. The high-shoulder side of each ring faces the thrust load, so orientation on the shaft determines which direction the bearing supports. In a paired arrangement the ground faces are brought together and the locknut is tightened until those faces meet, which establishes the built-in preload.
