Product Description

What this part is

A Parker Series 2A heavy-duty pneumatic cylinder — 1-1/2 inch bore, 12 inch stroke, 5/8 inch diameter piston rod, double acting, rated to 250 psi air. Series 2A is Parker’s steel-bodied tie-rod air cylinder line: high-strength tie rods with rolled threads, a case-hardened and chrome-plated piston rod, the Jewel rod gland assembly and adjustable floating cushions. It is the workhorse air cylinder for press feeds, clamping, indexing, gates, diverters and general machine actuation.

Decoding the order code

01.50 – 1-1/2 inch bore2A – Parker Series 2A, heavy-duty steel tie-rod pneumatic construction, 250 psi rated12.000 – 12 inch net strokeThe letter groups between the bore and the stroke set the mounting style, rod thread and option package for this build; read the nameplate against Parker’s current 2A ordering table if you need to match a mounting exactly

What these specs mean in practice

Bore and pressure set the force. At 250 psi a 1-1/2 inch bore gives roughly 442 lbf extending; retracting, the 5/8 inch rod takes away piston area and drops that to roughly 365 lbf. Most shop air runs 80 to 100 psi, so expect nearer 140 to 175 lbf extending in a typical installation — size on your real line pressure, not the cylinder’s maximum.

Stroke and rod diameter go together. A 5/8 inch rod extended 12 inches is slender, so a compressive load pushing back down the rod has a genuine column-buckling limit, and any side load will wear the gland and the rod wiper. Guide the load if it does not act cleanly along the rod axis.

Series 2A cylinders carry adjustable cushions, which throttle the last part of the stroke so the piston decelerates instead of hammering the end cap. Set them before running at speed.

This is an air cylinder rated 250 psi, not a hydraulic cylinder. Do not put it on a hydraulic circuit — typical hydraulic pressures are several times its rating.

What is in the box

The cylinder only. No mounting brackets, no clevis or rod eye, no fittings, no seal kit and no switches are included. This is a used takeout removed from service, not new stock — expect cosmetic wear and budget for a seal kit if it is going back into continuous duty.

Installation and setup notes

Mount so the load acts along the rod axis; a tie-rod cylinder tolerates very little side load. Control speed with meter-out flow controls at the ports rather than throttling the supply, set the cushions before running at full speed, and feed it clean, dry, lubricated air. Inspect the rod for scoring and the wiper for damage before commissioning — on a takeout those fail first.

Interchange guidance

Series 2A follows the NFPA interchangeable envelope for 1-1/2 inch bore heavy-duty tie-rod air cylinders, so equivalent 250 psi NFPA cylinders from Bimba, Numatics, Norgren, Milwaukee Cylinder and SMC’s NFPA range bolt into the same mounting — provided bore, stroke, rod diameter and mounting style all match. Change any one of those and it is a related size, not a drop-in. The same cylinder is also stocked here in a 16 inch stroke; a hydraulic 2H or 3L series cylinder of the same bore is a different, far higher pressure product.
