A double row spherical roller bearing in the FAG 222xx wide dimension series, 90 mm bore, 160 mm outside diameter, 40 mm width, with a 1:12 tapered bore, a machined brass cage, C3 internal clearance and a lubrication groove and radial holes in the outer ring. Two rows of barrel-profile rollers run in a common hollow-ground spherical outer raceway, so the bearing self-aligns about its own centre under very heavy radial load.

Decoding the designation

In the FAG scheme 222 is the wide double row spherical roller series and the last two digits are the ISO bore code multiplied by five — 18 reads 90 mm, measured at the small end of the taper. E is the reinforced design with an increased roller complement and load rating. AS is the FAG code for an outer ring with an annular lubrication groove and radial holes, the same feature the ISO scheme writes as W33; both appear on this designation and describe one feature, not two. K is the 1:12 tapered bore. M is the machined brass cage. C3 is radial internal clearance greater than normal.

What these specs mean in practice

A double row spherical roller carries very high radial load and takes thrust in both axial directions, unlike the single row barrel rollers of the 202xx and 203xx series. The spherical outer raceway absorbs static misalignment from housing bore error and dynamic misalignment from shaft deflection, so this family dominates heavy shaft positions in conveyors, fans, crushers, screens, mill drives and gearbox output shafts. C3 clearance offsets the internal clearance lost to a tight mounting and to the inner ring running hotter than the housing, and a machined brass cage tolerates the temperature and shock that come with those duties.

Taper bore and adapter sleeve

The 1:12 tapered bore mounts on an adapter sleeve rather than directly on a plain shaft seat. The matching sleeve is an FAG H2318, whose own bore seats an 80 mm shaft, one bore-code step below the bearing bore. Driving the bearing up the sleeve taper progressively reduces internal clearance, so the fit is set by measured clearance reduction rather than by a shaft interference dimension. The sleeve is a separate item and comes with its own KM locknut and MB tab washer.

Relubrication

The outer ring carries an annular groove and radial feed holes, so grease or oil arriving through the housing port reaches the rollers directly rather than migrating in from the ring faces. The groove and holes are aligned with the housing lubrication port on assembly; rotated so the port sits against a housing land, a grooved ring feeds no better than a plain one.
