What this part is

A SEW-Eurodrive MFZ connection module — the wall- or machine-mounted housing and module carrier used in SEW’s decentralised drive system for MOVIMOT gearmotors and MOVI-SWITCH units. It carries the terminal blocks for the incoming mains, the outgoing motor/hybrid cable and the fieldbus, and it accepts a separate MF.. or MQ.. electronics module that clips onto its face. The point of the two-part arrangement is serviceability: all the field wiring stays landed in this housing, so a failed electronics module is swapped in minutes without disturbing a single conductor.

Earlier copy described this as a communication module. That overstates it in a way that costs buyers money. The MFZ31A is the connection module — the housing and carrier — not the bus electronics. The protocol (PROFIBUS DP, InterBus, DeviceNet, CANopen or AS-Interface) is determined by the MF../MQ.. electronics module that plugs into it, and no electronics module is fitted to or included with this item. On its own the MFZ31A passes power and provides terminals; it does not talk to a fieldbus.

Decoding the designation

MF — SEW’s decentralised fieldbus interface range for MOVIMOT and MOVI-SWITCH.Z — the connection module (Zwischenmodul / carrier and housing), as distinct from the MF.. and MQ.. electronics modules. This letter is the whole distinction: MFZ = housing, MFP/MFI/MFD/MQP/MQD = electronics.31 — the connection-module variant, which fixes the terminal arrangement and the connector provision inside the housing. What this means in practice

The reason SEW built the system this way is that decentralised drives live out on the machine, in the dirt, at the end of a hybrid cable. Getting a fieldbus node repaired usually means unbolting the electronics and clipping on a new one — and that only works if the housing is intact and correctly wired. So the MFZ housing is the part that gets damaged (cracked glands, stripped threads, corroded terminals) and the part that people struggle to source, because catalogues bury it behind the electronics modules. If your fault is mechanical or terminal-side, this is what you need. If your fault is a dead bus node with a healthy housing, buy the electronics module instead.

Installation notes

Mount on a flat surface with the gland entries oriented downward so water and washdown run off rather than in; the ingress rating of the assembly depends entirely on correctly sized and tightened glands and on the electronics module being fully seated with its gasket clean. Land the protective earth properly — decentralised installations run long motor cables and the earth is doing real EMC work. Verify the electronics module you intend to fit is documented against a Z31A carrier before wiring anything, and set the bus address on the electronics module, not here.

Interchange guidance

Interchangeable with other MFZ31A / 823 548 1 connection modules. Other MFZ variants are related parts, not equivalents — MFZ11A, MFZ21A, MFZ23A, MFZ26A, MFZ33A and MFZ36A differ in terminal arrangement, connector provision and the electronics modules they accept, so substituting one for another can leave you with a housing your module will not sit on. Match the Z-number, not just the MFZ prefix.
