The 6SL3040-0MA00-0AA1 is the SINAMICS S120 Control Unit CU320 — the closed-loop control and coordination brain of a modular S120 drive line-up. It carries the drive firmware and axis configuration and talks to the Line Modules, Motor Modules and Sensor Modules over DRIVE-CLiQ, giving a single co-ordinated multi-axis system rather than a rack of independent drives.
The ordering number 6SL3040-0MA00-0AA1 is specifically the CU320 without a CompactFlash card, and the card slot on this unit is empty (visible in the photographs, marked CF with the insertion arrow). This matters more than any other line on this page: the SINAMICS firmware and the licensed option data live on that CF card, so a CU320 without one will not boot and will not run a drive. You must supply a Siemens SINAMICS CompactFlash card carrying firmware compatible with your Motor and Line Modules, plus any performance or Safety Integrated licences your application needs. Third-party CF cards are not accepted.
SIEMENS and SINAMICS markings on the book-format housing. Front panel carries the CF card slot, status LEDs RDY, DP1, OPT and MOD, measuring sockets T0, T1, T2 and M, a 9-pin PROFIBUS D-sub, a row of DRIVE-CLiQ sockets, ventilation grilles and a gold-plated protective-earth stud with mounting foot. The RDY/DP1/OPT/MOD LED set identifies this as the original CU320, not the later CU320-2.
Supply: 24 V DC nominal, 20.4 to 28.8 V DC range; supply current rating 6.5 ADigital output supply: 24 V DC, 0.5 AInterfaces: DRIVE-CLiQ, PROFIBUS DP, RS232, operator panel (AOP/BOP) connectionOperating temperature −10 °C to +50 °C; storage −20 °C to +70 °CRelative humidity 5 % to 95 %, non-condensingWeight 1.8 kg
The CU320 is fed from the cabinet’s 24 V control supply, and it is the component that holds the axis configuration and the safe-torque-off logic. A supply that sags below 20.4 V during contactor inrush will drop the control unit and take every axis on the DRIVE-CLiQ chain with it, so size and decouple the 24 V rail properly rather than sharing it with solenoids.
One control unit only — no CompactFlash card, no DRIVE-CLiQ cables, no operator panel, no terminal modules, no licences, no documentation. The CU320 has been superseded by the CU320-2 family (CU320-2 DP and CU320-2 PN); the CU320-2 is not a drop-in replacement because it requires different firmware and a different CF card, and PROFINET versions change the fieldbus entirely. For an existing S120 cabinet running CU320 firmware, a like-for-like CU320 is usually the only practical repair. Also written 6SL30400MA000AA1, 6SL3040 0MA00 0AA1, 6SL3040-0MA00-0AA1.
Source-data note: the previous description stated the unit was “manufactured in the United States”. Country of manufacture cannot be verified from this record or the photographs, and Siemens SINAMICS control units are not US-built, so the claim has been removed rather than repeated. Country of origin has been left blank.
