Series 2A is Parker’s steel-bodied tie-rod air cylinder line, with high-strength tie rods on rolled threads, a case-hardened and chrome-plated piston rod, the Jewel rod gland assembly and adjustable floating cushions. It is the workhorse air cylinder for press feeds, clamping, indexing, gates, diverters and general machine actuation.

What these specs mean in practice

Bore and pressure set the force. At 250 psi a 1-1/2 inch bore gives roughly 442 lbf extending. Retracting, the 5/8 inch rod takes away piston area and drops that to roughly 365 lbf. Shop air commonly runs 80 to 100 psi, which gives nearer 140 to 175 lbf extending.

Stroke and rod diameter go together. A 5/8 inch rod extended 12 inches is slender, so a compressive load pushing back down the rod has a column-buckling limit, and side load wears the gland and the rod wiper.

Series 2A cylinders carry adjustable cushions, which throttle the last part of the stroke so the piston decelerates instead of striking the end cap.

This is an air cylinder rated 250 psi rather than a hydraulic cylinder. Typical hydraulic pressures are several times its rating.

Series 2A follows the NFPA interchangeable envelope for 1-1/2 inch bore heavy-duty tie-rod air cylinders, so equivalent 250 psi NFPA cylinders from Bimba, Numatics, Norgren, Milwaukee Cylinder and SMC’s NFPA range bolt into the same mounting where bore, stroke, rod diameter and mounting style all match. Change any one of those and it is a related size rather than a drop-in. A hydraulic 2H or 3L series cylinder of the same bore is a different, far higher pressure product.
