Product Description

What this part is

A Telemecanique GV3M manual motor starter — a three-pole thermal-magnetic motor circuit breaker with an adjustable overload dial, an instantaneous magnetic short-circuit trip and a push-button operator with visible trip indication. The GV3M range spans 1 to 63 A; this is the 1.6 to 2.5 A step.

Decoding the designation

GV – Telemecanique / Square D manual starter and motor circuit breaker family3 – GV3 frame, 1 to 63 A, push-button operated with visible trip indicationM – thermal-magnetic protection with push-button operator (a P suffix in the sister GV2 range denotes the rotary handle version)07 – current step, here 1.6 to 2.5 A. The neighbouring steps are 06 (1 to 1.6 A) and 08 (2.5 to 4 A)

What these specs mean in practice

This is a self-protected manual starter rather than a plain breaker: the thermal element handles motor overload and the magnetic element handles short circuits, so one device covers both in a motor branch. At the 1.6 to 2.5 A setting the published maximum motor sizes are 1/16 HP single-phase, and on three phase 1/2 HP at 200 V, 1/2 HP at 230 V, 1 HP at 460 V and 1½ HP at 575 V. The 50 kA withstand at 480 V AC quoted for the GV3M range is what makes it usable in a stiff industrial panel. It has a test trip mechanism so the trip can be proved without a fault, and it can be padlocked in the OFF position, which is what makes it acceptable as a local isolating means for maintenance.

Quantity and configuration

Sold as 1 piece — the starter only. Auxiliary contact blocks, fault-signalling contacts, short-circuit signalling contacts, undervoltage and shunt voltage trips, enclosures, busbar systems and panel adaptor plates are separate GV3 accessories and are not included.

Installation and setup notes

Set the graduated knob to the motor nameplate full-load current rather than to the top of the band. Where the device sits in a busbar system or beside other starters, respect the published electrical clearance rules for the operating voltage — in this family the required side clearance increases with Ue, and it is a common cause of failed panel inspections. Use the test trip mechanism at commissioning to prove the trip path before energising the motor.

Interchange guidance

The current step is the part number: GV3M06 and GV3M08 sit either side of this one and neither protects a 2 A motor correctly. GV3M and GV2M are different frames — GV2ME07 covers the same 1.6 to 2.5 A band in the later TeSys GV2 body and is Schneider’s functional successor for this rating, but it is not a mechanical drop-in and its accessory blocks differ. GV2P is the rotary-handle version. Accessories are frame-specific: GV2 blocks do not fit GV3 bodies. Note also that Square D distributed this range in North America, so the same device appears under both Telemecanique and Square D branding.
