Decoding the designation

LM451310 is the cup number in the Timken LM451300 block, and the trailing D marks a double cup. A D suffix therefore means something different on each half of a tapered roller bearing: on a cup it is a double cup that takes two cones, while on a cone it is a one-piece double cone that takes two single cups.

What these specs mean in practice

Both raceways are ground in one ring, so their included angles and their axial spacing are fixed at manufacture. Row-to-row alignment is then a property of the part rather than of the housing, which is why a double cup is the usual outer race for a TDO arrangement locating a shaft in both directions from a single housing bore. It also removes one press fit from the build. At 14 in outside diameter and 48 lb the ring is stiff enough to hold both raceways round under heavy radial load, and the wide 4-1/8 in section spreads the housing contact pressure.

Bore form

A cup has no bore and no seal. Its internal surfaces are the two ground tapered raceways and its external cylindrical surface is the housing fit. Rollers and cages are retained on the cones, not in the cup.

The two cones then enter from opposite ends and are drawn up on the shaft to set the specified endplay or preload. Support across the full 4-1/8 in of the outer surface keeps both raceways round; a relieved or interrupted housing bore concentrates load on one row.
