This is an imperial single-row tapered roller bearing cone — the inner ring together with its tapered rollers and cage. It is one half of a tapered roller bearing. The mating cup (outer race) is a separate part number and is not included in this listing.
358 is a standard imperial cone number in the 35x family. Its matching cup is 352A (352 is also listed against it), so a complete single-row bearing is a 358 cone plus a 352A cup. The 1.7717 in bore is the inch equivalent of a 45 mm shaft, which is why this cone turns up in metric-shafted European and Asian machinery as well as inch-dimensioned drivetrains.
Cone bore (d): 1.7717 in / 45.001 mm
Inner ring width (B): 0.8540 in / 21.692 mm
Mating cup 352A outside diameter (D): 3.4990 in / 88.875 mm
Mating cup 352A width (C): 0.8586 in / 21.808 mm
Cone weight: 2.48 lb / 1.123 kg
The ratings below are catalogue values for the complete 358/352A single-row assembly, not for the cone alone.
Dynamic radial rating C1 (1 million rev basis): 21,800 lbf / 97,000 N
Dynamic radial rating C90 (90 million rev basis): 5,650 lbf / 25,100 N
Dynamic axial rating Ca90: 2,960 lbf / 13,200 N
Static radial rating C0: 20,000 lbf / 88,800 N
K factor: 1.91 · e: 0.31 · Y: 1.96 · geometry factor Cg: 0.0732
Effective load centre: −0.19 in / −4.8 mm (inside the cone backface)
Maximum shaft fillet radius cleared: 0.06 in / 1.5 mm
Shaft backing shoulder diameter, frontface (da): 1.97 in / 50 mm
Shaft backing shoulder diameter, backface (db): 2.09 in / 53 mm
A K factor of 1.91 puts this in the shallow-angle, radially biased half of the tapered roller range: it carries a lot of radial load for its size and rather less thrust, and it generates comparatively little induced thrust on the opposing bearing. That is the right trade for a mainly radial position such as a countershaft or an idler, and the wrong one for a thrust-dominant vertical mounting. The small 0.06 in maximum shaft fillet radius is a real constraint — a generous radius left by a machinist will hold the cone off its shoulder and destroy the setting.
This listing ships 1 Pc — one 358 cone. No cup, no spacer, no seal.
Drive the cone on square, loading the backface only and never the rollers or cage. Keep the shaft shoulder within the da/db figures above. A tapered roller bearing has no internal clearance until it is mounted, so the end play or preload is set after the cup is seated in the housing, and the two must be adjusted as a pair.
358 is a dimensionally standardised imperial cone, so 358 cones from Timken, Koyo, NTN, Bower/BCA, SKF and Federal-Mogul interchange with one another and with any of those makers’ 352A cups. 358A and 359 are related sizes, not equivalents — they sit in the same family but differ in bore or width, so match the number rather than the family.
