3980 is the Timken cone number in the 3900 imperial series. Paired with its 3920 cup it forms the complete single-row assembly designated 3980/3920. No precision suffix is marked, so the cone is standard Timken inch tolerance; a Class 3 cone would carry a trailing –3, *3 or #3.
A tapered roller cone carries radial load and thrust in one direction through the tapered raceway, and the roller path is matched to the cup raceway angle of its published pairing. Cone and cup are supplied and replaced as separable components, which allows the same 3920 cup to serve several bore sizes in the series. The stamped steel cage and case-carburized rings give a tough core with a hard raceway surface, suited to shock loading in gearboxes, axles and wheel ends.
One cone. Straight bore. The 3900 series cone runs against a single cup in a TS arrangement, or against a double cup in a two-row mounting.
The cone bore is normally an interference fit on the shaft, seated square against the shaft shoulder. Maximum shaft fillet radius at the backing shoulder is 0.140 in, so a larger fillet is relieved or undercut to let the cone face bear fully. Bearing setting is established after mounting by axial adjustment of the cup, to end play or preload per the application.
Direct interchanges are the 3980 cone from other tapered roller makers to the same ISO/ABMA inch designation. The 3982 shares the same 3920 cup with a 2.5000 in bore, and the 3984 with a 2.6250 in bore — both are related sizes rather than substitutions. Operating temperature range is –65 to 250 °F.
