What this part is

An SKF 22218 CY/C2 W33 double-row spherical roller bearing. Bore 90 mm, outside diameter 160 mm, width 40 mm, straight cylindrical bore, open on both faces. The two rows of barrel-shaped rollers run in a common spherical outer raceway, which is what makes the bearing self-aligning: the inner ring, rollers and cage tilt within the outer ring to absorb shaft misalignment without loading the roller ends.

Decoding the designation

The 222 series is the wider, higher-capacity of the two main spherical roller dimension series, and the trailing 18 is the bore code, giving 90 mm. In SKF’s scheme CY denotes a pressed brass window-type cage — a distinct cage from the pressed steel CC and CJ variants of the same envelope. C2 specifies radial internal clearance tighter than normal, and W33 is the lubrication groove machined around the outer ring together with three radial feed holes through it. There is no K, so the bore is straight.

What these specs mean in practice

A double-row spherical roller bearing carries very heavy radial load and takes thrust in both directions, and it tolerates static and dynamic shaft misalignment that would destroy a cylindrical roller bearing. Cage construction sets part of the speed and load behaviour: a pressed brass window cage runs the rollers in individual pockets and handles shock and marginal lubrication differently from a pressed steel cage, which is why the cage letter is part of the part number rather than a detail. Fitting notes

The straight-bore version is an interference fit on the shaft, made by even heating of the inner ring rather than by pressing across the rollers. Radial internal clearance is checked with a feeler at the unloaded roller row before and after mounting, since the interference fit reduces it. Housings carrying a W33 bearing are drilled to line up with one of the three outer-ring holes and the bearing is set with the groove clear of the housing joint.
