A double row spherical roller bearing in the FAG 222xx wide dimension series, 90 mm bore, 160 mm outside diameter, 40 mm width, with a straight cylindrical bore, a machined brass cage and C3 internal clearance. Two rows of barrel-profile rollers run in a common hollow-ground spherical outer raceway, so the bearing self-aligns about its own centre while carrying heavy radial load.
In the FAG scheme 222 is the wide double row spherical roller dimension series, and the final two digits are the ISO bore code multiplied by five — 18 reads 90 mm. E1A is the Schaeffler X-life reinforced design and brass cage code for this family; the code is E1A, not a bare E1. M is the machined brass cage. C3 is radial internal clearance greater than normal. The absence of a K means the bore is straight, and the absence of a W33 means the outer ring carries no lubrication groove or holes.
A double row spherical roller carries very high radial load and takes thrust in both axial directions, which distinguishes it from the single row barrel roller of the 202xx and 203xx series. The spherical outer raceway absorbs static misalignment from housing bore error and dynamic misalignment from shaft deflection under load, so this is the standard bearing for heavy shaft positions in conveyors, fans, crushers, screens, mill drives and gearbox output shafts. The 222 series is the wide section, giving the higher radial rating in this envelope.
A machined brass cage handles high temperature, shock loading and vibration and holds its form under sustained load, where a polyamide cage is limited to roughly 120 °C. C3 clearance is greater than normal, offsetting the internal clearance lost to an interference fit on the shaft and to the inner ring running hotter than the housing — the usual condition in a heavily loaded roller position.
1 Pc. Straight cylindrical bore, so no adapter sleeve is involved and the bearing mounts directly on the shaft seat. Open on both faces, with no seals, no snap ring, and no W33 lubrication groove or holes in the outer ring.
A 90 mm bore on an interference fit is mounted with an induction heater or an oil bath rather than driven on; impact passed from one ring to the other through the rollers brinells the raceways in a way that is invisible until the bearing runs. Heating is limited to approximately 120 °C. The spherical outer raceway takes up residual misalignment between shaft seat and housing bore on assembly.
The 90 x 160 x 40 envelope and the 22218 base number are ISO standard, so the envelope is served across makers: SKF 22218E, NSK 22218EAE4, Timken 22218 and NTN 22218EAD1 sit in the same size. Internal design codes are maker-specific and not equivalent to each other — Schaeffler E1A, SKF E and NSK EA each denote that maker’s own roller complement and rating — so match the rating rather than the letter. A 22218EK is the tapered-bore version and mounts on an H2318 adapter sleeve, so it is a related size, not a substitution; a W33 variant adds an outer ring groove and three holes and is a different article number.
