Product Description

What this part is

A FAG 1214 K double–row self–aligning ball bearing, 70 mm bore x 125 mm outside diameter x 24 mm wide, with a 1:12 tapered bore. Two rows of balls run in two deep grooves in the inner ring and on one common sphered raceway in the outer ring. Because that outer raceway is a section of a sphere, the inner ring and ball set tilt freely inside the outer ring, so the bearing tolerates shaft deflection and housings that are out of line. Sold as 1 Pc.

Decoding the designation

12 — the narrow self–aligning ball series. The 22xx series is the wide equivalent on the same bore and outside diameter (a 2214 is 70 x 125 x 31 mm).
14 — bore size code, 70 mm bore.
K — tapered bore, taper 1:12. This is the single most important character in the number, because it changes how the bearing mounts.

What these specs mean in practice

The tapered bore is not a variant of the straight bore — it is a different mounting system. A K bearing is driven up a matching 1:12 taper, and the further you push it on, the more the inner ring expands and the more internal clearance you take out. That means you set the running clearance at assembly rather than buying it, which is how conveyor and plummer–block shafts get a tight, creep–free inner ring fit on plain shafting with no machining.

In almost every installation, the taper comes from an adapter sleeve rather than the shaft. For a 1214 K that sleeve is an H214, which has a 60 mm bore, so the assembly mounts on a plain 60 mm shaft and is clamped up with a KM14 lock nut and MB14 lock washer. That sleeve, nut and washer are separate items and are not included here. If your shaft is already machined with a 1:12 taper, the bearing goes straight on and no sleeve is needed.

As a self–aligning ball bearing this is a radial–load part with limited thrust capacity. Note also that the static rating is well below the dynamic rating — correct and published for this family, because the sphered outer raceway gives a smaller contact area than a deep–groove raceway. It handles running load well and standing shock load less well.

Published ratings and mounting data

Bore 70 mm (tapered 1:12), outside diameter 125 mm, width 24 mm.
Two rows of balls; open, no seals or shields.
Matching adapter sleeve H214 — 60 mm shaft bore. Lock nut KM14, lock washer MB14.
Envelope reference capacity for the 1214 size: SKF 1214 ETN9, dynamic 35.8 kN, static 14.6 kN, limiting speed 7 000 rpm, mass 1.23 kg. Cage design shifts the figures slightly, so treat these as the reference for the envelope.

Quantity and configuration

One bearing per order — 1 Pc. What ships is the bearing only: outer ring, both ball rows, cage and inner ring, as one non–separable unit. No adapter sleeve, lock nut or lock washer is included. A tapered–bore bearing needs the sleeve (or a tapered shaft seat) to mount, so budget for an H214 plus KM14 and MB14 if you do not already have them.

Fitting notes

Drive the bearing up the taper with the lock nut and measure as you go — the amount of drive–up sets the residual internal clearance, and overdoing it preloads the balls and kills the bearing. Check clearance with a feeler gauge between the outer ring raceway and an unloaded ball, or measure the sleeve drive–up distance against the maker’s table. Bend the tab of the MB14 lock washer into a slot in the sleeve once you are set. Never clamp or shim the outer ring square: the outer ring is meant to be free to tilt, and squaring it defeats the self–aligning function.

Interchange guidance

The 70 x 125 x 24 tapered–bore self–aligning ball envelope is standard, so SKF 1214 K, NSK 1214K, NTN 1214K and Koyo 1214K all fit the same seat and take the same H214 sleeve. FAG’s current polyamide–cage version is written 1214–K–TVH. The straight–bore 1214 is a related size on the same envelope, not an equivalent — it will not mount on an adapter sleeve, and this one will not sit directly on a plain shaft. The 2214 K shares the bore and outside diameter but is wider, so it is also a related size rather than a substitute.
