Two rows of balls run on a common spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring, ball complement and cage swivel freely inside the outer ring. That construction gives the bearing genuine self-alignment — it tolerates shaft deflection and housing-bore misalignment without inducing edge load — along with the very low friction characteristic of ball rolling elements.

Decoding the designation

23 is the ISO wide dimension series of the double-row self-aligning ball family and 09 is the bore code, giving 45 mm at five millimetres per unit. TV is the glass-fibre reinforced polyamide cage. C3 is radial internal clearance greater than normal. The absence of a K means a straight cylindrical bore, so the bearing mounts directly on the shaft seat without an adapter sleeve.

What these specs mean in practice

A self-aligning ball bearing has the lowest friction of any rolling bearing type, which makes it the choice on long, unsupported or deflecting shafts where the drive power available is modest. The trade is capacity: the spherical outer raceway means point contact on the outer race, so radial rating is well below a roller bearing in the same envelope and axial capacity is limited. C3 clearance suits an inner ring running hotter than its housing or a tight interference fit that closes working clearance once mounted. The FAG 22309 shares this exact 45 x 100 x 36 envelope but is a spherical roller bearing with barrel rollers, a far higher radial rating and thrust capacity in both directions — a different part, not an alternative.
