What this part is

A matched pair of SKF 7201 CD/P4ADGA super-precision single-row angular contact ball bearings, each 12 mm bore by 32 mm outside diameter by 10 mm wide. The 7201 designation is the ISO 72-series angular contact envelope. These are small spindle bearings for high-speed grinding spindles, precision rotary axes, instrument and metrology spindles, small servo drives and ball screw ends.

What these specs mean in practice

The 15° contact angle is the high-speed end of the super-precision range. A shallower angle resolves more of each ball’s load radially and less axially, which lowers heat generation and centrifugal ball loading. Small high-rpm spindles use 15° for that reason, accepting lower thrust capacity and axial stiffness than a 25° bearing of the same envelope would give.

Light preload is the matching choice. Preload removes internal play and sets stiffness, and the light grade does that with the least frictional heat, which is what lets a small-bore pair run near its speed limit without thermal runaway.

The DGA matching is what makes the pair usable straight out of the box: the ring faces are ground so the two bearings reach the tabulated light preload as soon as they are clamped, in back-to-back, face-to-face or tandem arrangement, with no shim stack and no measurement. On a 12 mm bore that matters — there is no practical way to shim a preload this small by hand.

The 72-series section is wider and stiffer than the 70-series 7001 of the same bore, so it carries more load in exchange for a larger housing envelope.
