An RHP 7218CTSUL angular contact ball bearing. Bore 90 mm, outside diameter 160 mm, width 30 mm. One row of balls, open on both faces, with a machined laminated phenolic cage guided on the outer ring. Single bearing, ground for universal matchability.

Decoding the designation

The carton carries two RHP schemes for the same bearing. In the main scheme, 7218-C-T-SUL-P0 gives a 15° contact angle from the C, a machined laminated phenolic cage from the T, a universally matchable single ground for light preload from SUL, and normal precision from P0. In the B-series scheme, B-7218-X2-TA-UL-EP1 gives the same 15° angle from X2 and the same normal class from EP1. Barden catalogues the same envelope as 218HDL.

What these specs mean in practice

A 15° contact angle is the high-speed, lower-thrust end of the angular contact range: less axial capacity than a 25° or 40° bearing on the same envelope, in exchange for higher speed and lower heat generation. Dynamic capacity is 108 kN and static capacity 93 kN, with a limiting speed of 8,000 rpm. The laminated phenolic cage is light and quiet and tolerates oil lubrication well, and being outer-ring guided it remains stable at speed.

Quantity and configuration

Universal grinding means any two bearings of this designation can be clamped together back-to-back, face-to-face or in tandem and will arrive at light preload without shims or ground spacers, so singles can be combined into sets as required. A single bearing used on its own runs without preload against a second bearing elsewhere on the shaft. Being a preload-ground bearing, it carries no radial internal clearance value.

Fitting notes

The bore is straight and mounts directly onto a cylindrical shaft seat, with no taper and no adapter sleeve. Where two are paired, the ground ring faces set the preload, so both rings are clamped solidly against the shaft shoulder and the housing abutment. Laminated phenolic cages absorb moisture and are best left in the sealed carton until fitting.
