Decoding the designation

72 is the medium 02 dimension series and 14 is the bore code, giving a 70 mm bore. B is the FAG code for a 40° contact angle. TVP is the glass-fibre reinforced polyamide cage, ball-guided and one-piece; the FAG phenolic cage codes are TPA, T and TG and are a different construction. No clearance or class suffix follows, so clearance is CN and the class is normal.

What these specs mean in practice

A 40° contact angle is the highest thrust capacity in the standard angular contact range, carrying axial load in one direction and setting the ball path steeply into the raceway. That trades speed and radial capacity for stiffness under thrust, which is why B-series bearings are the usual choice for worm drives, machine screws and vertical pump shafts. The polyamide cage runs quieter and lighter than pressed steel and tolerates shock and momentary lubricant starvation, with an upper continuous temperature around 120 °C.

Fitting notes

A single 40° angular contact bearing takes thrust in one direction, so the high shoulder faces away from the thrust load. Two units mounted back-to-back or face-to-face take thrust in both directions; these are non-universal bearings, so a matched preload requires ground spacers.

SKF 7214 BEP, NSK 7214B and Timken Fafnir 3MM214 are same-spec 40° equivalents. FAG 7214B.MP is a related size with a machined brass cage; FAG 7214C is a related size on the same envelope at a 15° contact angle.
