An SKF 22209 CC/W33 double-row spherical roller bearing. Bore 45 mm, outside diameter 85 mm, width 23 mm, straight cylindrical bore, open on both faces. Two rows of barrel-shaped rollers run in a single spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring and roller set tilt bodily inside the outer ring and the bearing accommodates shaft misalignment as a normal condition of service.

Decoding the designation

The 222 dimension series is the wider, higher-capacity spherical roller series, and the bore code 09 gives 45 mm. CC is the pressed steel cage with an inner-ring guide ring; CJ is the same construction under SKF’s earlier suffix and appears on cartons of this size interchangeably. W33 is the lubrication groove machined around the outer ring together with three radial feed holes through it. There is no K, so the bore is straight, and there is no clearance suffix, so radial internal clearance is normal, CN.

What these specs mean in practice

A double-row spherical roller bearing carries very heavy radial load and takes thrust in both directions, and its self-aligning geometry tolerates shaft deflection and housing misalignment that would spall a cylindrical roller bearing in short order. Normal CN clearance is the general-purpose setting: enough running room for an interference fit on the shaft and moderate temperature difference across the rings, without the extra internal freedom of C3. The W33 groove and holes let grease be fed through the housing straight into the rolling elements, which is how these sizes are relubricated on a schedule without dismantling the assembly.

Fitting notes

The inner ring is an interference fit on the shaft, made by even heating rather than by pressing across the rollers. Residual radial internal clearance is checked with a feeler at the unloaded row after mounting, since the interference fit consumes part of it. A housing carrying a W33 bearing is drilled to register with one of the three outer-ring holes, and the bearing is set with the groove clear of the housing split line.
