What this part is

This is an SKF 22209 KM double-row spherical roller bearing with a 45 mm tapered bore, 85 mm outside diameter and 23 mm width. Two rows of barrel-shaped rollers run on a common spherical raceway in the outer ring, so the shaft can swivel relative to the housing and absorb misalignment while carrying load.

Decoding the designation

The 222 prefix is the double-row spherical roller family and the 09 bore code gives 45 mm. K specifies a 1:12 tapered bore. M specifies a machined brass cage. There is no clearance suffix, so radial internal clearance is normal, CN, and no W33, so the outer ring is plain with no lubrication groove or holes.

Bore taper and mounting hardware

Adapter sleeve H309 fits this bearing and is a separate part, not included. The sleeve seats on a 40 mm plain shaft — one bore-code step below the bearing bore — and is supplied with a KM9 locknut and an MB9 lockwasher.

Cage material and what it buys

A machined brass cage is stiffer and more tolerant of high temperature, shock loading and marginal lubrication than a pressed steel window cage, and it raises the usable speed and temperature ceiling of the bearing. That is what separates the M variant from the CC variant of the same size.

What these specs mean in practice

The double row carries very high radial load and takes axial load in both directions. The 1:12 taper makes running clearance adjustable at assembly: driving the inner ring further up the taper expands it and reduces clearance, so the fitter sets the final figure. Starting from CN rather than C3 leaves less drive-up margin, which suits an assembly where shaft and housing run at similar temperatures.

Fitting notes
