| Arrangement Configuration | Single direction: carries load pushing the washers together only. For reversing thrust, mount two back to back or use a double-direction bearing. |
| Additional Attributes | Operating temperature -20 °C to +120 °C. Both washer seating faces must be FLAT, SQUARE to the shaft axis and hard enough not to indent — an out-of-square seat loads a few rollers and the bearing fails well below rating. |

What this part is — and why the 81 prefix matters more than the K:
This is a Schaeffler INA axial cylindrical roller bearing, single direction, at the 81109 size: 45 mm bore, 65 mm outside diameter, 14 mm overall height. It is a complete thrust bearing — a shaft washer, a housing washer, and the cage-and-roller assembly between them.
That distinction is the most commercially important thing on this page, because the same size exists in two forms and they are constantly confused:
81109-TV — the complete bearing. 14 mm overall height, because that height includes both washers.K81109-TV — the cage-and-roller assembly only, about 6 mm high. No washers. It is designed for applications where the machine’s own surfaces are hardened and ground to act as the raceways.
Buy a K-prefix part expecting a complete bearing and you receive a roller cage with nowhere to run. Buy a complete bearing where the design assumed K and your stack height is wrong by 8 mm. This listing is the complete 81109-TV, with washers.
Pure thrust, one direction — the constraint to design around:
An axial cylindrical roller bearing carries load along the shaft axis and nothing else. It has no radial capacity whatsoever. The rollers sit flat between two parallel washers; a radial force simply pushes the washers sideways relative to each other. So this bearing never works alone on a rotating shaft — it must be paired with a radial bearing that takes all the side load, while this one takes the thrust.
It is also single direction. It carries axial load pushing the two washers together and nothing at all pulling them apart. For thrust that reverses, you need two of these mounted back to back, or a double-direction bearing.
What you get in exchange for those constraints is capacity. 163 kN static axial in a 65 mm outside diameter and 14 mm of height is far beyond what a thrust ball bearing of the same footprint would hold, because cylindrical rollers contact along a line rather than at a point. This is the bearing for jacking screws, press rams, worm gear thrust faces, machine-tool tables, hydraulic swivel joints and vertical shafts carrying their own weight.
81 — axial cylindrical roller bearing, complete with both washers.1 — dimension series.09 — bore code, 45 mm.TV — injection-moulded, glass-fibre reinforced polyamide cage. Schaeffler’s TV suffix denotes the moulded plastic cage; TN is the equivalent designation used elsewhere in the trade, which is why 81109-TN turns up as a cross-reference.
The polyamide cage sets the temperature limit — check it:
Published operating range is −20 °C to +120 °C, and the ceiling belongs to the cage rather than the steel. Glass-fibre reinforced polyamide is light, quiet, low-friction and cheap to produce, and at 14 mm of height a moulded cage lets the bearing be shorter than a machined-cage design would allow. But polyamide is degraded by sustained high temperature and by the oxidation products of ageing oil. If your application runs hot — a press platen, a hot gearbox, a vertical shaft near a furnace — or uses an aggressive synthetic lubricant, verify the temperature at the bearing rather than at the housing surface. Where the ceiling is marginal, a machined-cage variant is the correct specification and this one is not it.

Limiting speed and reference speed are not the same number:
Worth being clear about, because the two figures differ by a factor of more than two and quoting the wrong one leads people astray. Reference speed (1,970 rpm) is the thermally-derived speed at which the bearing reaches a defined steady-state temperature rise under reference conditions — it is the practical continuous-duty figure. Limiting speed (5,200 rpm) is a mechanical ceiling set by cage strength and lubricant retention, achievable only with enhanced cooling and lubrication. For a normal grease-lubricated installation, size against the reference speed. Designing to 5,200 rpm because it is the bigger number is how a thrust bearing ends up running hot enough to soften its own cage.
Four complete bearings in stock, sold individually. Four is a useful depth here: reversing-thrust applications need them in back-to-back pairs, so four covers two positions, and jacking and press mechanisms often carry several identical thrust faces.
Both washer seating faces must be flat, square to the shaft axis and hard enough not to indent under the roller-end load — a soft or out-of-square seat concentrates load on a few rollers and the bearing fails at a fraction of its rating. Mount with the correct washer against the rotating member. Because there is no radial capacity, the bearing needs radial location from something else in the assembly; do not rely on the bore to centre it under load.
