A FAG HS7001-C-T-P4S-UL high-speed super-precision spindle bearing: a single-row angular contact ball bearing, 12 mm bore by 28 mm outside diameter by 8 mm wide, open on both faces, with a 15° contact angle, a machined phenolic window cage and P4S accuracy. It is universally ground with light preload, so pieces of the same designation form matched sets.
HS marks the high-speed design, which uses a ball complement smaller than standard. 70 is the extra light dimension series and 01 gives the 12 mm bore. C is the 15° contact angle. T is the fabric-base laminate phenolic cage. P4S sets boundary dimensions to ISO class 4, equivalent to ABEC 7, with running accuracy to ISO class 2, equivalent to ABEC 9. UL is single universal grinding with light preload.
Smaller balls carry less mass, so centrifugal load on the outer raceway falls sharply and the bearing holds its stiffness at speeds where a standard-ball design would lose it. Reference speed is 130,000 rpm and limiting speed 80,000 rpm. The trade is capacity: dynamic load rating is 2.45 kN and static 0.96 kN, with a fatigue limit load of 0.099 kN.
A 15° contact angle favours speed and radial stiffness over thrust capacity; a 25° design in the same envelope would carry more axial load and turn slower. ISO class 2 running accuracy holds radial and axial runout to a few microns, which is what sets the achievable surface finish on a ground part.
The phenolic cage is machined from fabric-reinforced laminate and rides on the outer-ring land. Its low mass and porous oil-holding structure suit continuous very high speed running, with long-term operation to about 100 °C.
One bearing, universally ground. Matched pairs and tandem sets are assembled from individual pieces of this designation, and the light preload is established by the ground ring faces without spacers or shims.
Mounting force goes only through the ring being fitted. The rings carry a marking that orients the high sides of the outer rings toward each other in an O arrangement. At these speeds cleanliness and lubricant quantity govern life more than load does, so the bearing goes to the spindle straight from its wrapper.
The Timken/Fafnir 2MM9101WI CR SUL is a direct interchange — same series, angle, phenolic land-riding cage and single universal light-preload grinding. Within the FAG range, HC7001-C-T-P4S-UL substitutes hybrid ceramic balls, HS7001-E-T-P4S-UL uses larger balls for more capacity, and B7001-C-T-P4S-UL is the standard-ball design, so all three are related sizes rather than equivalents.
