What this part is

An RHP 22208 double–row spherical roller bearing, 40 mm bore x 80 mm outside diameter x 23 mm wide, straight cylindrical bore, with a pressed steel cage and the W33 lubrication feature in the outer ring. Two rows of barrel rollers run on one concave outer raceway, so the inner ring, rollers and cages swivel as an assembly inside the outer ring. That is the self–aligning action: heavy radial load, axial load in both directions, and genuine tolerance of shaft deflection and housing misalignment. Sold as 1 Pc.

Decoding the designation

222 — ISO dimension series for the wide, high–capacity double–row spherical roller family.
08 — bore size code, 40 mm bore.
E — increased–capacity internal design: larger rollers on a flangeless inner ring, so more load out of the same envelope.
J — pressed steel cage.
W33 — lubrication groove around the outside diameter of the outer ring with three radial feed holes through to the rollers.
No clearance suffix, so normal radial internal clearance rather than C3 or C4.

What these specs mean in practice

W33 is the feature that decides whether this bearing suits your housing. If the housing has a grease fitting or an oil feed into the bore, the groove and its three holes are how lubricant reaches the rollers — in from the outside diameter, mid–width, where it does the most good. Fit a bearing without W33 into a plumbed housing and the grease has to migrate in from the ends, which is exactly how relubricated bearings end up starved and how the raceways end up polished.

A pressed steel cage is the standard, cost–effective build. It handles ordinary industrial duty well; where you need higher temperature or heavier shock, the machined brass builds of the same bearing are the step up. Where you need quiet running and lighter weight, the polyamide–cage builds are the alternative.

Normal clearance suits a position running close to ambient on standard shaft and housing fits. If the machine originally carried a C3 or C4 bearing, do not substitute normal clearance: the inner ring grows in service and takes the clearance up until the rollers are preloaded.

Fitting notes

Press only on the ring taking the interference fit; never drive mounting force through the rollers. The bearing self–aligns, so the housing bore does not have to be dead square to the shaft, but the outer ring still needs support across its full width or the roller ends will edge–load. If the housing has a relubrication port, make sure the W33 groove stays registered with it through the full range of axial float on the free–end bearing.

Interchange guidance

The 40 x 80 x 23 spherical roller envelope is shared industry–wide, so SKF 22208 E, FAG 22208–E1–XL, NSK 22208EAE4, NTN 22208EAD1, Nachi 22208EXW33, Koyo 22208RHRW33 and Timken 22208EJW33 all fit the same seat. Match two things beyond the size: the W33 lubrication feature and the clearance class, which is normal here. A same–envelope part with no lube groove, or with C3 or C4 clearance, is a related size rather than a like–for–like replacement. RHP bearing production became part of NSK, so NSK is the route to current supply and both RHP and NSK numbers are worth searching.
