120 — the MRC size code. The trailing 20 sets the bore at 100 mm, which is what a buyer matches to the shaft journal first.
S — Conrad deep groove construction. Both raceway shoulders run unbroken all the way round, so the bearing takes radial load in any direction and axial load in either direction from a single row of balls.
A deep groove raceway is cut to roughly a third of the ball diameter, and that depth is what gives a single-row ball bearing its two-way axial capacity alongside its radial rating. Internal Clearance: CN — the normal ABMA band, sized for an ordinary interference fit on the shaft and a location or slip fit in the housing at moderate temperature rise. Closure Type: Open both faces gives the lowest running torque of any closure and lets the housing supply and change the lubricant. Material: Chrome steel through-hardens to a uniform core, which is what holds raceway geometry under repeated Hertzian contact.

Mounting force is applied through the ring being fitted and is never transmitted across the balls from one ring to the other. A 100 mm bore is normally mounted with heat, taking the inner ring to around 80 °C above ambient and dropping it onto the journal. Shaft and housing seats are cleaned and measured before assembly.
The interchange is another MRC 120S. The 100 x 165 x 20 mm envelope is MRC’s own for this size, so a substitution has to agree on bore, outside diameter, width and closure together before it will drop into the same seat.
