An Accu-Coder Model 711 incremental shaft encoder from Encoder Products Company. It is the original cube-style industrial encoder: a rotary shaft encoder that produces a single-channel square wave as the shaft turns, on an open collector output. It is built for direct connection to programmable controllers, electronic counters, motion controllers and motor drives.
Encoder Products Company builds the Model 711 to order, and the full factory designation extends the 711 base with fields for counts per revolution, shaft diameter, output type, connector style and mounting, in the pattern 711-nnnn-S-S-n-S-S-N. The number carried on this listing is the 711 base designation. The Model 711 body, output stage, speed rating and electrical characteristics are common across the series, and counts per revolution is the field that varies from one built unit to the next.
A single-channel encoder produces one pulse train, which carries speed and distance but not direction. That is the right choice for a conveyor running one way, a flowmeter, a rate indicator or a length measurement on a unidirectional web, and it keeps wiring to a single input. Direction sensing requires a two-channel quadrature encoder, which is a different device.
Symmetry of 180 degrees electrical, held to within 18 degrees, means the high and low halves of each pulse are close to equal. Counters and drives that trigger on both edges or measure pulse width depend on that symmetry, and it is the specification that separates an instrument-grade encoder from a simple pulse generator.
An open collector output sinks current to common rather than sourcing it, and the 250 mA rating is generous for this class, so the encoder can drive a relay or a long cable run directly as well as a logic input. An open collector stage needs a pull-up resistor at the receiving end to define the high level.
The 6000 rpm maximum speed and the 125 kHz maximum output frequency work together to set the usable limit: at high counts per revolution the frequency ceiling is reached before the mechanical speed limit, so the two figures are read as a pair.
Function: incremental rotary shaft encoder

Shaft type: solid shaft
Manufacturer: Encoder Products Company
Sold as 1 Pc — one encoder. No mating cordset, coupling or mounting bracket is included.
The cube housing bolts to a flat face and the solid shaft couples to the driven shaft through a flexible coupling, which absorbs the small misalignment that would otherwise load the encoder bearings. The open collector output is completed with a pull-up resistor at the controller input. Because the output is a single channel, the receiving input is configured for counting or rate measurement rather than quadrature decoding.
Encoder Products Company builds the Model 715 and Model 716 in the same cube family, and those offer different output and channel configurations, so they are related models rather than substitutes for a single-channel 711. Within the 711 model itself, two units match only when counts per revolution, shaft diameter, output type and connector style all agree, because those are the built-to-order fields. A replacement is specified as a Model 711 with the counts per revolution and shaft dimensions of the unit being replaced.
