A double-row spherical roller bearing on the ISO 22211 envelope — 55 mm bore, 100 mm outside diameter, 25 mm width — with a straight cylindrical bore, a two-piece steel cage, the W33 lubrication feature and C3 internal clearance. Two rows of barrel-shaped rollers run against a single spherical outer raceway, so the inner ring, rollers and cage swivel bodily inside the outer ring. That is the self-aligning action, and it is why this bearing type survives in conveyor pulleys and long shafts where housings are never quite in line.
222 – ISO dimension series 222, the wider and higher-capacity of the two common spherical roller series.
11 – bore code; 11 × 5 = 55 mm bore.
No K – the absence of a K is the specification here. This is the straight, cylindrical-bore build. It presses directly onto a 55 mm shaft seat and cannot be used with an adapter sleeve.
VJ – Torrington cage code: a two-piece steel cage of the finger type. Steel, not brass. CJ is the two-piece steel window cage; the brass and bronze cages carry BR, YM, YMB or YMD.
W33 – lubrication groove machined around the outer ring with three radial oil holes through it.
C3 – radial internal clearance greater than normal.
A straight bore is the simpler mounting and the one most machines are built for: a properly toleranced shaft seat, an interference fit, a shoulder or locknut to locate it axially. The clearance is set at the factory and you do not adjust it, so the fit you choose is the whole story — and that is exactly why this one is a C3.
C3 clearance fails in both directions if mismatched. Above-normal clearance is specified when the mounting will consume some of it: a heavy interference fit expands the inner ring and closes running clearance, and a hot inner ring running against a cooler housing does the same. Fit a normal-clearance bearing into that duty and it runs preloaded, hot and short-lived. Fit C3 into a cool, slow, lightly loaded seat designed for normal clearance and it runs looser than intended, with noise, roller skidding and reduced fatigue life. Match the class the machine was designed around.
The steel finger cage is the workhorse: tougher against shock than machined brass, cheaper, and with no temperature ceiling of its own the way a polyamide cage has. Brass-caged builds of the same bearing carry a different published load rating, so a cage code is never cosmetic.
W33 is what makes a housing grease port useful. Fresh grease enters the groove, passes through the three holes and is delivered between the two roller rows, pushing old grease outward instead of channelling around the outer ring.
Figures below are Timken’s published values for 22211EJW33, the current-production two-piece steel-cage bearing on this envelope, and describe the geometry and capacity class of the 22211 spherical roller.
Bore 55 mm, outside diameter 100 mm (3.9370 in), width 25 mm (0.9843 in)
Dynamic radial load rating C1, 1 million revolutions – 140,000 N (31,400 lbf)
Static radial load rating C0 – 142,000 N (31,900 lbf)
Thermal reference speed – 5,800 rpm oil, 4,700 rpm grease
e factor 0.23; Y0 2.89; Y = 2.95 when Fa/Fr is at or below e; Y = 4.4 when Fa/Fr exceeds e
Maximum shaft fillet radius 1.5 mm (0.060 in)
Shaft backing shoulder diameter 66.0 mm (2.600 in); housing backing shoulder diameter 91.0 mm (3.600 in)
Sold as 1 Pc — one complete double-row spherical roller bearing: outer ring, inner ring, two rows of rollers and their steel cages, assembled. Open on both faces, no seals and no shields. No adapter sleeve is needed and none is included, because this is the straight-bore build.
Mount on a 55 mm cylindrical shaft seat with an interference fit sized for the load and for the C3 clearance class. Heat-mount with an induction heater or hot-oil bath rather than hammering; the steel cage tolerates heat mounting without difficulty. Press only on the ring being fitted, never through the rollers.
Respect the abutment diameters above so shoulders, seals and end covers bear on the ring faces and clear the ring corners. If the housing carries a grease port, line it up with the W33 groove — the groove is continuous, so radial position does not matter, but the port must open into it.
Torrington was absorbed into Timken, and Timken’s published supersession replaces the CJ and VCSJ cage styles with EJ; the current part on this envelope is 22211EJW33. Genuine straight-bore, open, W33, C3 interchanges include SKF 22211 E/C3 with /W33, FAG 22211-E1-C3, NSK 22211EAE4C3, NTN 22211EAD1C3, Koyo 22211RHW33C3, Consolidated 22211 C3 W33, Link-Belt 22211LBW33C3 and Rollway 22211W33C3. Legacy Torrington 55SD22 is the same bearing in the older numbering.
The tapered-bore 22211K and its variants (22211KVJW33C3, 22211KCJW33C3, SKF 22211 EK) share the 55 × 100 × 25 envelope but are a related size, not an equivalent — a 1:12 tapered bore will not seat on a cylindrical shaft, and this cylindrical bore will not mount on an H311 adapter sleeve. Match the bore form before the outside dimensions.
