What this part is

NTN 22224B double-row spherical roller bearing, 120 mm bore, 215 mm outside diameter, 58 mm width. Two rows of barrel rollers run against a single spherical raceway ground into the outer ring. That geometry lets the inner ring and roller assembly swivel within the outer ring, so the bearing absorbs shaft misalignment and shaft deflection instead of edge-loading the raceways.

Decoding the designation

In the 222xx series the last two digits are the bore code, so 24 × 5 mm gives the 120 mm bore. The 222 prefix is the lighter of the two common spherical roller width series. There is no K in the designation, so the bore is straight. The carton also carries 22224CJ, 22224CY and 22224E J; in NTN’s scheme the trailing J denotes a pressed steel cage and Y a machined brass cage.

What these specs mean in practice

Basic dynamic capacity is 455 kN and basic static capacity 590 kN. A double-row spherical roller bearing carries very high radial load and takes thrust in both directions, which is why it is the default in conveyor pulleys, fans, crushers, gearbox shafts and any drive where the housings are bored separately or the shaft is long enough to deflect under load. The trade-off against a cylindrical roller bearing in the same envelope is speed, because the spherical raceway and barrel rollers introduce more sliding contact.

Bore form

Straight bore. The shaft seat diameter equals the 120 mm bore, and axial location is by shaft shoulder, spacer or locknut against the inner ring face. The tapered-bore version of this size, 22224K, is a related part that mounts on an H3124 adapter sleeve.

Interchange guidance

The 120 × 215 × 58 mm envelope is ISO-standard across the 22224 designation, so SKF 22224 CCW33, FAG 22224-E1 and NSK 22224EAE4 occupy the same space. Cage material and the presence of a W33 outer-ring lubrication groove differ between executions and change both the rating and the relubrication path, so match the full suffix where the housing has a feed port or the duty is near the rating.
