What these specs mean in practice

The spherical outer raceway is the whole point of the 1200 series. On a long shaft, a welded frame, or a pair of housings bored in separate operations, the angular error that would edge-load a rigid bearing is simply absorbed by the inner ring tilting. The price of that freedom is low axial capacity, since the balls can climb the spherical race rather than resist thrust, so this bearing supports the shaft radially and axial location comes from elsewhere. The polyamide cage runs quietly, has low mass, and is rated for continuous service to 120 °C, above which a steel or brass cage is required.

Fitting notes

The bearing mounts directly onto a cylindrical shaft seat, with force applied to the ring being fitted. The housing bore is a plain cylindrical seat, since the misalignment capability is internal to the bearing. Axial location of the shaft comes from the second bearing position or a shoulder. The open faces take lubricant from the housing cavity, packed to roughly one third of its free volume for grease service.

Interchange guidance

The direct equivalent is a straight-bore double-row self-aligning ball bearing in the 45 x 85 x 19 mm envelope with a polyamide cage: SKF 1209 ETN9, NSK 1209TN, NTN 1209, Koyo 1209. The 1209-K variant has a 1:12 tapered bore and mounts on an H209 adapter sleeve, so it is a different part in the same envelope and the sleeve is a separate item. A 6209 deep groove bearing is rigid and is not an interchange where misalignment must be absorbed.
