What this part is

A single-row deep groove ball bearing, 90 mm bore by 140 mm outside diameter by 24 mm wide, open on both sides — no shields, no seals. Deep groove ball bearings carry radial load plus axial load in either direction. The open form is what goes into oil-lubricated gearboxes, motor ends with their own grease chambers and any housing that does its own sealing.

What these specs mean in practice

Open is a specification, not a downgrade. An open bearing arrives without service grease and expects the housing to seal it and the machine to lubricate it. In return it takes a fresh grease charge whenever you want, tolerates flow-through and mist oil, and runs with the lowest friction and the highest speed ceiling of the family. It is not a substitute for a 6018-2Z or 6018-2RS1, which arrive pre-greased and closed against contamination; drop an open bearing into a duty that relied on its own seals and it will ingest whatever is in the housing.

Clearance is normal (CN), which suits a shaft and housing running at similar temperatures with a standard interference fit. If the machine had a 6018/C3, fit a C3 — a normal-clearance bearing on a hot shaft loses its clearance to thermal growth and runs hot; a C3 in a cool, lightly loaded application can be noisy. It is a mismatch that fails both ways.

Fitting notes

At 90 mm bore, heat mounting to about 80 to 100 °C beats a cold press. Load only the ring being fitted and never across the balls. Grease to roughly a third of the free internal space for general duty, or let the gearbox oil do the work, and make sure the housing seals are in good order — the bearing has none of its own.

Interchange guidance

Genuine interchanges are same-envelope open 90 x 140 x 24 mm deep groove bearings: FAG 6018, NSK 6018, NTN 6018, Koyo 6018 and Nachi 6018. A 6018-Z, 6018-2Z or 6018-2RS1 changes the closure and therefore the lubrication and sealing duty, and a 6018/C3 changes the clearance class — related parts, not drop-in equivalents.
