What these specs mean in practice

C3 is the detail to get right. It gives more room between balls and races than a standard CN bearing, which is what you want when the inner ring is pressed on tight, when the shaft runs appreciably hotter than the housing, or when both. Fit a CN bearing in that situation and thermal growth eats the clearance and preloads the bearing until it overheats. Fit a C3 where a CN was specified on a cool, lightly loaded machine and you can get extra noise and ball skidding. It is a mismatch that fails in both directions, so match what came out.

Because the bearing is open, it arrives dry of any service grease and must be lubricated on assembly and sealed by the housing. It is not a substitute for a 6022ZZ or 6022DDU, which arrive pre-greased and closed. An open bearing does relube easily and tolerates flow-through oil, which is why gearboxes and oil-mist spindles prefer it.

Fitting notes

Heat-mount or press on the inner ring only — never drive load through the balls. Grease fill of roughly a third of the free space suits most motor and gearbox duty. Standard shaft fit for a rotating inner ring under normal load is k5 or k6 with an H7 housing.

Interchange guidance

6022 C3 is an ISO-dimensioned size, so SKF 6022/C3, FAG 6022-C3, NTN 6022C3 and Koyo 6022C3 are genuine interchanges on envelope and clearance. A plain 6022 or 6022 C2 is a different clearance class and a 6022ZZ or 6022-2RS is a different closure — those are related sizes, not drop-in equivalents.
