Universally faced rings are ground so the inner and outer rings are the same width and the face positions are set at manufacture to give a predetermined force once two bearings are clamped together. Back-to-back and face-to-face mounting hold the same preload value, and tandem mounting shares load equally between pieces. Target preload is reached without face-step measurement or custom spacer grinding.
A 15° contact angle favours speed and low running heat. A 25° angle favours axial stiffness and thrust capacity. Light preload is the most frequently selected level and suits moderate load and speed duty; heavier preloads add rigidity, reduce speed capability and generate more heat.
Speed factors applied to a single bearing’s limiting speed, light preload: back-to-back pair 0.80, set of three 0.65, set of four 0.60. Medium preload pair 0.60. Heavy preload pair 0.40. Face-to-face mounting applies a further 50 percent reduction. A spring-loaded tandem pair takes a factor of 0.95. Preload level and arrangement set the speed ceiling alongside bearing size.
The outer-ring guided laminated phenolic cage is light and self-lubricating, so it runs quietly and generates little heat at spindle speeds. The catalogue gives a maximum recommended operating temperature of 120 °C for laminated phenolic resin caged bearings.
