What this part is

An MRC 5208CFF double-row angular contact ball bearing — 40 mm bore, 80 mm outside diameter, 30.2 mm (1-3/16 in) width — with a pressed steel shield on each face. Two rows of balls sit on outwardly convergent angled raceways in a single rigid pair of rings, so one bearing carries radial load and thrust in both directions. It replaces an opposed pair of single-row bearings where shaft length is limited.

Decoding the designation

5208 – MRC double-row angular contact ball bearing, 40 mm bore; the ISO 3208 envelope
C – rigid, non-filling-notch design with outwardly convergent contact angles, supplied with C3 internal clearance
FF – two shields, one on each face (equivalent to the 2Z / ZZ shield code in other schemes). A single F denotes one shield

What these specs mean in practice

Outwardly convergent contact angles give the bearing a wide effective support span inside a short envelope, which resists shaft tilting as well as thrust. The 30° angle carries a large thrust share for a ball bearing while keeping speed capability well above a 40° design. C3 clearance is greater than normal, which suits an interference fit on the shaft, a warm running housing, or a bearing that sees a temperature rise between inner and outer ring. Steel shields are non-contact: they keep coarse debris out with almost no added friction, and they retain grease without the drag of a rubbing seal.

Quantity and configuration

Sold as 1 Pc. One complete double-row bearing with both shields fitted. No lock nut, snap ring or spacer is included.

Fitting notes

The bearing locates the shaft axially in both directions, so the housing should hold it between a shoulder and an end cap and the second bearing on the shaft should be left free to float. Mounting force is applied to the ring being fitted; the shields are not a press surface. Grease is retained behind the shields, and a relubrication port in the housing has no path into the bearing.

Interchange guidance

The direct equivalent is a shielded double-row angular contact bearing in the 40 x 80 x 30.2 mm envelope with a 30° angle: SKF 3208-A-2Z, FAG 3208-B-2Z-TVH, NSK 3208B-2ZTN, Nachi 5208-2Z. The open versions MRC 5208C and MRC 5208-A share the envelope but have no shields, and MRC 5208CF carries only one shield, so those are related versions rather than drop-in equivalents. A 6208 single-row deep groove bearing is not an interchange.
