A Timken single cone for the 215000 inch tapered roller series: one tapered inner ring carrying its full complement of tapered rollers in a stamped steel cage. Bore is 4.0000 in and cone width is 2.8750 in. The rollers and cage are retained on the cone, and the raceway they run against is the separate cup that completes the bearing.
EE is a Timken series prefix within the inch tapered roller programme and 215040 is the cone number. The trailing -3, marked on the carton as an asterisked 3 and on the record as #3, is Timken precision Class 3 — a tighter bore, outside diameter and width tolerance band than the standard Class 2 used across the general inch range.
Tapered roller geometry puts the roller, cone raceway and cup raceway on lines that converge at a common apex, so a single row carries heavy radial load together with thrust in one direction. Class 3 tolerances tighten the mounted running accuracy, which matters where the shaft position has to be held closely or where two rows are set against each other and the endplay window is narrow. The pressed steel cage keeps the rollers spaced and holds them on the cone as a unit for handling and installation.
Cone only. One piece, supplied as the cone with its roller and cage assembly. Single row.
The cone is a press fit on the shaft journal and the cup is a fit in the housing bore, so the two halves are set to their working endplay or preload after both are seated. The cone back face abuts the shaft shoulder, and the shoulder diameter has to clear the cone back rib for the ring to seat square. Lubrication is by oil or grease.
The 215040 cone number is used across the industry, and NTN, SKF, Koyo, NSK and Bower list an EE215040 cone to the same envelope. Those equivalents are supplied to standard precision, so the Class 3 build is a tighter part than a plain EE215040. The NA215040 designation is a cone furnished for two-row and TDO service, which makes it a related part rather than a substitution.
