Decoding the designation

In SKF’s super-precision scheme 7212 is the ISO 72 series size code. CD is the D-design 15° contact angle execution with a machined cage. DGC is a preload class on a universally matchable bearing — the DGA / DGB / DGC ladder runs light, medium, heavy, so DGC is heavy preload. P4A is SKF’s super-precision tolerance class, equivalent to ABEC 7.

What these specs mean in practice

A 15° contact angle favours speed and radial stiffness over thrust capacity; the 25° ACD execution of the same envelope carries more axial load and runs slower. Heavy preload raises system stiffness and running accuracy and lowers the permissible speed, which is why spindle builders select the preload class against the duty rather than the size alone.
